Abstract

508,617. Water gas generation. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW, Ltd., and SMITH, J. H. May 2, 1938, No. 13033. [Class 55 (i)] In the intermittent process of generating water gas, the generator and the set beyond the generator are each purged separately and successively after the blast period or after a back run period, the purging of the set beyond the generator in the latter case being effected by the back run itself. In a usual water gas set having a waste heat boiler c, a wash box d, air blast valve e, secondary air blast valve f, gas valves k, l, steam control valve h and three-way valve i, the latter connects on the one hand to the back run steam inlet n and on the other hand to three-way valves p, q, which can direct the steam to the base of the generator or to the secondary air blast pipe o, the valve p being controlled by the stack valve g and the valve q by the secondary blast valve f. After the usual blast period, the generator a is upwardly purged with steam, the valve q being set accordingly ; the secondary air blast valve f is now open and the purged gases from the generator are burnt in the regenerator b until the evolving water gas is sufficiently low in nitrogen content. The blast valve f is then closed which automatically moves the valve q to direct the steam into the pipe o for purging the set beyond the generator, the stack valve g being open. The latter is finally closed which automatically reverses the valve p so that the steam passes directly to the base of the generator for an up-run. The invention may then be applied after a backrun which may then follow, with the valves set accordingly. After this period, since the set beyond the generator is full of steam, only the generator is purged. Steam is supplied to the generator base, gas valve l being open and k closed. The succeeding blast with both blast valves e, f open drives out and burns any remaining water gas in the generator. The purging in either case effects an economy in the water gas produced. Specification 508,618 is referred to.'
