Aug. 3, 1933, No. 21839. Convention date, May 4. [Class 55 (i).] Water gas with a low carbon-monoxide content is made by steaming a previously blasted fuel bed, and passing the water gas through heated iron oxide, the carbon monoxide being converted into carbon dioxide, the reduced oxide being steamed to obtain hydrogen, and the stored heat of the blast gases being used to decompose enriching oil, or to superheat the steam or both. The plant comprises a water gas generator 1, carburetter 3, superheater 2, wash box 4, and iron oxide conversion tower 5. Air is admitted through valved pipes 17, 18, 19, steam through valves 11 and 12, and oil through valve 16, a valve 14 directing the gases from the top or bottom of the generator through a valved pipe 8. The blast gases heat the carburetter 3 and superheater 2, and, if necessary, the iron oxide tower 5, escaping either by the stack 20 or 21. Hydrogen is made by passing steam from valve 15 through the superheater and carburetter over the reduced iron oxide, the gas passing to the wash box. In an up-run, the water gas passes valves 14 and 8 through the oxide tower 5, carburetter 3 and superheater 2 to the wash box, while oil is injected by the pipe 16. In a down-run the valve 14 is reversed the gas leaving this valve taking the same course as during an up-run. In a further up-run the apparatus is purged by the passage of water gas before blasting re-commences. The iron oxide is contaminated by the formation of sulphide which may be burned off by the passage of superheated air. Water gas and steam may be passed simultaneously over the iron oxide.
