Abstract

793,035. Gas producers. GAS COUNCIL, and DENT, F. J. April 22, 1954 [March 6, 1953], No. 6338/53. Class 55 (1). A gas-producer has a generator 1 through which air and steam are passed alternately in " blow " and " run " periods, a regenerator 2 and a recuperator 5 both traversed by the blow gases during a " blow " period, air for the blow being preheated by passing through the recuperator and the whole of the steam for the run being preheated in the regenerator. During the blow period air enters by conduit 7, passes through the recuperator 5 in indirect heat exchange with the blow gases, and conduit 10 into the generator 1. Blow gases leave by conduit 3 and pass downwardly through the regenerator 2 and upwardly through the recuperator 5, secondary air being added to the gases at the top of the regenerator through the conduit 13a or partly at the top and partly at the bottom through the conduit 13b. During the run period, valve 4 is shut and valves 12 and 18 in the conduits 11 and 17 are opened. Steam is passed into regenerator 2 through valve 16 and pipe 15 and passes into the generator 1 through conduit 17, water-gas being withdrawn through conduit 11. Sensible heat in the water-gas and in the " blow gases after leaving the recuperator 5 may be utilized in a water-heat boiler. A carburetter and superheater may be provided for carburetting the water-gas if desired. In a modification the blow gases may be passed through the recuperator and then the regenerator or the blow gases may be divided into two streams and passed through the regenerator and recuperator in parallel.
