548,397. Hydrogen. POWER-GAS CORPORATION, Ltd., and GRISENTHWAITE, A. T. June 6, 1941, No. 7147. [Class 90] In the production of hydrogen by the steamiron process wherein steam is used for purging the apparatus after the reduction phase, the iron oxide mass is purged separately from the remainder of the apparatus. In the illustrated plant wherein reducing gas is admitted by . inlet 8 below the oxide mass 2 and excess gas is burnt in a superheater 4 after admixture with air admitted at 9, the purging steam is admitted by valve 19 to inlet 9. It is first pased through the superheater to stack 6 ; the stack valve is then closed and valve 20 opened so that the oxide mass 2 is purged. The invention may be applied to apparatus in which the generator and superheater are arranged side by side and connected at the top, as described in Specification 548,398 and in which the hot gases passing through the stack undergo heat exchange with the supply of reducing gas.
