Eccentrics used in variable-speed ratchet gearing consist of superposed eccentric discs 15, 14, Fig. 3, which are driven independently from the same shaft 1 and are adapted to be displaced relatively to one another, while rotating, to vary the throw of the eccentric, and therefore the speed transmitted. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, there are six inner discs 14 secured in progressive phases to the driving-shaft 1 and alternating with loose toothed wheels 13 driven through a countershaft 11 at the same mean speed as the discs 14. A relative angular displacement of the wheels 13 effects through pin and slot connections 20, 20a with the discs 15 the operation in unison of the six eccentrics. The shaft 11 is driven through a differential train 8, 6, 2, which has a normally fixed side wheel 2. The speed of the shaft 11 having been thus doubled, the gears 12, which it carries, are of half the size of the gears 13 to compensate. A displacement from rest of the wheel 2 effected manually through a worm 4 effects the required differential movement while rotating of the outer discs 15.
