492,805. Variable speed gearing. MONZEE, G., and JOSKIN, J. March 24, 1937, No. 16866/38. Convention date, March 24, 1936. Divided out of 494,415, [Group XXXI]. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear giving seven forward speeds and a reverse, comprises a driving-shaft 1 with an integral bevel pinion driving a bevel gear 4 secured to a tubular shaft 5. The shaft 5 has freely - running bevel gears H, G, F mounted thereon and adapted to be locked thereto by plungers 12 controlled by a selector member D within the shaft. The bevel gears H, G, F are in mesh with rings of bevel teeth on a freely running disc 3 around the driving- shaft 1 and these rings of teeth also mesh diametrically opposite with freely - running bevel gears L, N, P on a second tubular shaft 6 provided with locking plungers 12 as for the first shaft 5. Secured to the shaft 6 is a spur gear 7 which serves for driving onto a differential gear 15 of the vehicle. By locking different pairs of the two groups of bevel gears to the shafts 5 and 6 respectively, seven different forward speeds of the final spur gear 7 are obtained. For reverse speed, all the locking plungers 12 are withdrawn and the spur gear 7 on the shaft 5 locked directly to the shaft 6 by a plunger U controlled by a selector member S so that a direct reverse drive is obtained from the bevel gear 4.
