Variable-speed gearing is rendered automatic by a planetary mass or masses h which are positively connected by elliptic or like gearing io both driving and driven shafts a, b. In the arrangement shown, there are two flywheels h, h<1> connected by planet wheels e, e<1> and subjected to changes of momentum while turning in one direction by elliptic gear pairs g, f and f<1>, g<1>, the gears g, g<1> being secured to the shafts a, b respectively. Several such gear sets may be arranged in series.
