Abstract

173,957. Carter, W. J. Dec. 8, 1920. Variable-speed gearing suitable for motor vehicles comprises an epicyclic train controlled by disc-androller variable gearing or by a brake. In the arrangement described, a revoluble casing 5 carries bevel gears 8 meshing with gears 6, 7 secured to driving and driven shafts 1, 2, respectively. A disc 9 engages a friction rim 10 upon the casing 5 and a friction gear 11 turning with the shaft .2. The speed of the shaft 2 is varied by sliding the disc 9 across the gears 10, 11 as by means of a hand-lever 17. The gear 11 may also be caused to slide. A loose portion 12 at the centre of the disc 9 allows the shaft 2 to be brought to rest. The arrangement allows reversed driving. The casing 5 may be held by a brake to relieve the friction gearing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 6588/08, 17803/09, 13647/11, and 20667/14.
