Toothed gearing.-In double-helical double reduction and other toothed gearing of the kind in which a driving-wheel 1 drives two or more wheels 2, 3, each wheel is connected to its shaft 5 by a torsion shaft or spring 9, which passes through the shaft 5 and is at one end 7 secured to the wheel and at the other end rigidly or slidably secured to the shaft end. The wheel is keyed so as to slide on the shaft 5 with rotary lost motion so that it can adjust itself axially and rotatably to the driving-stress, strain of the torsion shaft or spring being limited. The spring end 7 may slide axially on pins secured in the wheel body 4, or may be secured to the wheel rim 2, which has limited rotary freedom on the body 4. The shaft slides freely in its bearings 8 to permit correct engagement of the low-speed wheels 12, 14, and one bearing may be arranged between the wheels 2, 12 so that the wheel 2 is overhung.
