Abstract
L'invention concerne une balle de golf constituée d'une structure en trois parties dont un noyau élastomètre, une couche intermédiaire et une enveloppe thermoplastique. La couche intermédiaire est réalisée en matériau thermoplastique contenant 10% au moins de copolymère bloc-éther, de préférence 35% au moins. Le matériau peut aussi être avantageusement constitué de copolymère bloc-éther auquel est ajouté 0 à 90% d'ionomère(s), par rapport au poids total du mélange.
Description
BALLE DE GOLF
La présente invention concerne les balles de golf et plus particulièrement la structure d'une
balle composée de plusieurs parties.
L'art antérieur distingue deux types principaux de balles de golf D'une part, il existe les balles dites "deux pièces" solides Leurs propriétés résultent de l'association d'un noyau sphérique monopièce de type caoutchouc et d'une enveloppe thermoplastique dure en résine ionomère Ces balles ont pour principal avantage d'être très performantes dans les tirs longs grâce à leur vitesse de départ élevée En revanche, elles procurent une sensation de dureté à l'impact dont la cause essentielle est leur importante rigidité Ainsi, dans les tirs courts ou 1 O coups d'approche, la vitesse initiale élevée et la faible surface de contact avec la face perturbe le contrôle de la balle et le manque de vitesse de rotation pénalise la tenue de la balle au point de chute. D'autre part, on distingue les balles enroulées "trois pièces" Elles sont constituées d'un noyau central solide ou liquide, d'un enroulement de fils caoutchouc et d'une enveloppe 1 5 thermoplastique en résine ionomère ou en caoutchouc du type balata de un à deux millimètres d'épaisseur La grande déformabilité des couches externes du noyau enroulé provoque une sensation de douceur à l'impact, due à un taux de compression plus faible et par conséquent une surface de contact plus importante En revanche, ce type de balle affiche une baisse de
performance dans les tirs longs, à l'inverse des balles "deux pièces".
La présente invention vise à proposer une balle de conception nouvelle dont les performances donnent satisfaction dans tous les compartiments du jeu; à savoir, une vitesse initiale importante, proche de celle des balles les plus rapides, de bonnes sensations et un bon contrôle dans le jeu d'approche et également une reproductibilité des coups et une durabilité excellente. Un autre but de l'invention est de permettre de couvrir une large gamme de performances pouvant répondre à des demandes précises des utilisateurs en ne faisant varier qu'un minimum
de paramètres.
Un autre but de l'invention est de permettre l'utilisation d'un procédé de fabrication automatisé et fiable autorisant une grande productivité en raison de la structure et du choix des
3 O matériaux utilisés.
Les propriétés désirables sont obtenues conformément à la présente invention par une structure en trois parties La balle de golf est constituée d'un noyau élastomère, d'une couche intermédiaire et d'une enveloppe thermoplastique, et se caractérise principalement par le fait que la couche intermédiaire est réalisée en matériau thermoplastique contenant 10 % au moins de
copolymère bloc éther, de préférence 35 % au moins.
Par copolymère bloc éther, on entend les copolymères séquences formés à partir de blocs
présentant une certaine longueur de chaîne de leurs divers constituants.
Ils présentent deux phases l'une souple, le bloc éther et l'autre rigide En jouant sur la nature et la proportion de ces phases, on peut obtenir une gamme assez large de produits allant
du très souple au relativement rigide.
Parmi ces copolymères, ceux particulièrement préférés par la demanderesse sont les copolymères bloc amides d'une part, et les copolyéther bloc esters d'autre part Les copolymères bloc amides (PEBA) sont plus connus sous le nom de marque PEBAX commercialisés par la Société ATOCHEM On peut noter également l'emploi des GRILAMID
commercialisés par la Société EMS ou encore les VESTAMID) par la Société HJLS.
Quant aux polyéther bloc esters (PEBE), ce sont des produits présentant une phase rigide 1 O du type polybutylène téréphtalate (PBT) On les connaît sous le nom de marque HYTREL de
la Société DU PONT DE NEMOURS ou ARNITEL de la Société AKZO.
Les compositions de l'invention peuvent être utilisées pures pour former la couche intermédiaire On obtient alors des balles appréciées pour leur toucher excellent et leur vitesse initiale élevée En revanche, en raison d'un module élastique faible, elles ont tendance à se
1 5 déformer excessivement lors de l'impact.
Ce problème peut être avantageusement résolu en réalisant un mélange de copolymère bloc éther et d'ionomère(s) Le taux de ionomère(s) peut varier de 0 à 90 % en poids par rapport au poids total du mélange et de préférence est compris entre 20 et 65 % Les ionomères préférés par la demanderesse ont une dureté shore D comprise entre 55 et 65 et un module de flexion 2 0 compris entre 250 et 350 N/mm 2 Dans ce cas, la proportion de polyether bloc amide dans la composition est de 35 à 80 % pour une dureté de 30 à 40 shore D
La présente invention sera mieux comprise et ses avantages ressortiront de la description
suivante des modes de réalisation de l'invention.
La figure 1 est une vue en coupe partielle d'une balle de golf selon l'invention.
2 5 La balle de l'invention est une balle de type "trois pièces", c'est-à-dire constituée de trois
couches distinctes.
Comme le montre la figure 1, le noyau 1 est constitué d'un élastomère thermoplastique ou thermodurcissable ou vulcanisable dont le diamètre est compris entre 34 et 38 millimètres Sa densité est comprise entre 1 et 1,3 g/cm 3 et sa dureté se situe entre 40 et 50 shore D La 3 0 compression de ce noyau mesuré sous 150 Kg de charge est comprise entre 2,8 et 4,5 mm
environ pour un diamètre fixé de 36 mm.
L'élastomère particulièrement préféré par la demanderesse est un élastomère diène réticulé de type polybutadiène cis 1,4 contenant un produit de réaction à base d'oxyde de zinc et de diacrylate de zinc La composition contient en outre, un agent de réticulation tel qu'un peroxyde
3 5 dicumyl par exemple.
La partie intermédiaire 2 est un copolymère thermoplastique injectable et extrudable de polyéther-bloc amide et préférenciellement de polyétheresteramide du type de celui dont le
procédé d'obtention est décrit dans le brevet français n 2 273 021 de la Société ATOCHEM.
A titre d'exemple, des balles ont été réalisées avec une couche intermédiaire en PEBAXO
pur Les caractéristiques et propriétés figurent dans le tableau I et Il en annexe.
Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, la partie intermédiaire 2 est constituée d'un mélange de polyéther-bloc amide et d'ionomère(s) Les tableaux 3 et 4 rapportent les caractéristiques et propriétés des balles dont la couche intermédiaire est réalisée dans une composition à base de
PEBAX 3533 et d'ESCOR .
D'une manière générale, la couche 2 réalisée autour du noyau 1 a une épaisseur de 1 à 3 mm environ et un module d'élasticité compris entre 15 et 250 N/mm 2 Suivant le type de copolymère utilisé, la dureté peut varier de 25 à 50 shore D environ L'influence de ces 1 O paramètres est importante et conditionne les caractéristiques de performance de la balle Les balles dont la couche intermédiaire a une dureté faible de Tordre de 30 à 37 shore D (module de flexion faible) pour une épaisseur donnée seront appréciées pour leur toucher et leur contrôle en raison d'une vitesse de rotation ou "spin" élevée Au contraire, les balles dont la dureté de la couche intermédiaire est comprise entre 40 et 50 shore D (Module de flexion supérieur
1 5 également) seront appréciées pour leur vitesse initiale optimale et leur durabilité.
Si l'on compare les tableaux I et HI, on remarque que si l'on ajoute un ionomère à la composition de copolymère bloc-éther, les valeurs de dureté ne changent pas; en revanche, le module d'élasticité en traction mesuré augmente considérablement Cet effet est particulièrement intéressant car la couche intermédiaire contribue à la tenue mécanique du noyau lors de l'impact et limite sa déformation avantageusement La couche intermédiaire se comporte dynamiquement
comme la couche d'enroulement filamentaire élastique des balles dites "enroulées".
L'ensemble des deux parties 1 et 2 formant la structure interne de la balle a une
compression sous 150 Kg de 2,5 à 4 pour un diamètre donné total de 40 mm.
La couche externe 3 forme l'enveloppe de la balle Elle est réalisée en matériau
thermoplastique et a une épaisseur comprise entre 0,9 et 3 mm.
Le choix des matériaux est relativement large dans la mesure o les qualités essentielles demandées à l'enveloppe sont la résistance à rimpact et la durabilité Aussi, pour conserver ces caractéristiques à la balle de l'invention, il est important que la dureté de l'enveloppe soit
supérieure à celle de la couche intermédiaire.
La plage de dureté admise varie de 40 à 55 shore D et de préférence entre 43 et 48, pour
une densité de 0,8 à 1,2 g/cm 3 et un module de flexion de 30 à 280 N/mm 3.
Parmi les matériaux préférés par la demanderesse, on choisira de préférence les ionomères de type SURLYN , commercialisés par la Société du PONT de NEMOURS, ou les ionomètres de type IOTEK de la société EXXON, les copolymères bloc amides du type de ceux utilisés pour la couche intermédiaire, mais de dureté supérieure, les mélanges de ionomères et copolymères bloc amides, les polyuréthanes thermoplastiques ainsi que les
mélanges de ces matériaux.
L'association des trois couches 1, 2 et 3 donne naissance à une balle finie de diamètre compris entre 42,7 et 42,8 mm Sa compression mesurée sous 150 kg de charge est comprise
entre 2,5 et 4 mm.
A titre d'exemple, les caractéristiques physiques, de comportement et les propriétés de plusieurs balles de l'invention ont été comparées aux balles antérieures communément utilisées commercialement Les résultats sont présentés dans les tableaux I à IV suivants:
