DEUTSCHES
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäurepolymerisaten, die in Wasser
und organischen Lösungsmitteln praktisch unlöslich sind.
Es ist bereits bekannt, wasserunlösliche Carbonsäurepolymerisate durch Polymerisation eines Carbonsäuremonomeren,
z. B. von Acrylsäure, Maleinsäure oder deren Anhydrid, in Gegenwart eines Vernetzungs mittels,
z. B. von Divinylbenzol, von ungesättigten Diestern, wie Diallylmaleat oder Äthylenglykoldimethacrylat,
von Diallyl- oder Divinyläthern und anderen in den USA.-Patentschriften 2 340 110, 2 340 111 und
2 533 635 beschriebenen Verbindungen herzustellen. Es ist jedoch schwierig, diese Polymerisation mit Divinylbenzol
so zu regeln, daß man reproduzierbare homogene Polymerisate erhält. Bei der Anwendung von
ungesättigten Diestern und Diallyl- oder Divinyläthern als Vernetzungsmittel ist die Regelung weniger
schwierig, aber es entstehen Polymerisate, die den schwerwiegenden Nachteil aufweisen, daß sie in
Wasser bei hohen Temperaturen durch starke wäßrige Alkalien und Säuren (wie sie zur Regeneration von
Ionenaustauschharzen benutzt werden) leicht hydrolysiert werden. Diese Hydrolyse des vorher unlöslichen
Polymerisats hat infolge Zerbrechens der Ester- oder Äthervernetzungen eine erhebliche Verminderung
des wirksamen Molekulargewichts und eine Zunahme in der Quellung und in der Löslichkeit des Polymerisats
in Wasser zur Folge. Die Diallyläther zweiwertiger Alkohole vernetzen die Carbonsäuremonomeren
nicht wirksam, einige von ihnen wirken vielmehr als Kettenübertragungs- oder -modifizierungsmittel,
wodurch Polymerisate erzeugt werden, die ein geringes Molekulargewicht haben und in Wasser und
vielen anderen Lösungsmitteln löslich sind.
Man hat nun zu derartigen Polymerisationen auch schon Polyalkenyläther mehrwertiger Alkohole mit
mindestens 4 C-Atomen benutzt. Nach der französischen Patentschrift 964 938 werden z. B. solche
Polyallyläther von Pentaerythrit, Sorbit usw. zunächst mit einer Vinyl- oder Vinylidenverbindung, wie auch
Acrylsäure, verestert und die entstehenden Ätherester dann homo- oder mischpolymerisiert. Dabei entstehen
lineare Polymerisate, die in Lösungsmitteln löslich sind und zu wasser- und säurebeständigen Filmen und
Überzügen verarbeitet werden können.
Es wurde jetzt gefunden, daß sehr wertvolle Carbonsäurepolymerisate
erhalten werden, wenn ein Carbonsäuremonomeres, z. B. Acrylsäure, Maleinsäure oder
deren Anhydrid, mit bestimmten Mengen eines PoIyalkenylpolyäthers eines solchen mehrwertigen Alkohols
mit wenigstens 2 Alkenyläthergruppen je Molekül mischpolymerisiert wird. Die entstehenden Polymerisate

Lösungsmitteln praktisch unlöslich; sie widerstehen ferner dem hydrolytischen Abbau der Vernetzungen
durch starke Alkalien oder Säuren ganz besonders gut. Die Eigenschaften der Polymerisate ändern sich
dabei mit der Menge des benutzten Polyalkenylpolyäthers erheblich. Mit nur 0,10 bis 1,0 Gewichtsprozent
des Polyäthers werden unlösliche, gelähnliche Polymerisate erhalten, die als solche und besonders in
Form ihrer Salze unter enormer Quellung große Mengen Wasser zu absorbieren vermögen. Diese PoIymerisate
ähneln Tragantgummi u. dgl. natürlich vorkommenden Produkten, sind diesen aber erheblich
überlegen. Diese neuen, stark quellenden Polymerisate sind zur Herstellung der verschiedenartigsten schleimigen
oder kolloidalen gelähnlichen Präparate außerordentlich wertvoll, die z. B. für medizinische
Gallerten, Cremes und Salben, Druckpastenverdicker, als Abführmittel, Ionenaustauschharze u. dgl. m. Verwendung
finden. Mengen von 10% und mehr des Polyäthers führen zu sehr harten, unlöslichen und in den
Abmessungen stabilen Polymerisaten, die ein sehr
hohes Ionenaustauschvermögen besitzen. :
Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Verfahren zur Herstel^

vorgeschlagen, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß können andere Säureanhydride der allgemeinen

steht. Bevorzugt verwendet wird eine monoolefinische aikenylpolyäther benutzt werden können, gehören die
Acrylsäure der Formel CH2=CR-COOH, in der Butantriole, z.B. 1,2,3-Butantriol, die Aldotetrosen,

oder cycloaliphatischer Rest ist. Hierzu gehören also und Ribose; Ketopentosen, z. B. Araboketose und
z.B. Acrylsäure (die am meisten benutzt wird), Xyloketose; Aldohexosen, z.B. Glucose, Galaktose,
Methacrylsäure, Äthacrylsäure, «-Chloracrylsäure, Mannose, Gulose, Idose, Talose, Allose u. dgl.; Keto-
Crotonsäure, /J-Acryloxypropionsäure, Hydrosorbin- 55 hexosen, z. B. Fructose oder Lävulose, Sorbose
säure, Sorbinsäure, a-Chlorsorbinsäure, Itaconsäure, u. dgl.; andere Zucker, wie Mono-, Di-, Tri- und PoIy-
Citraconsäure, Mesaconsäure, Glutaconsäure, Aconit- saccharide, z. B. Saccharose, Maltose, Lactose und
säure u. dgl. Zu den anzuwendenden Carbonsäure- Raffinose; die Hexosane, Pentosane und Hexosan-
monomeren gehören auch Polycarbonsäureanhydride, Pentosane, die Galaktomannan- und Glucomannan-
z. B. Maleinsäureanhydrid, worin die Anhydridgruppe 60 gummen, Stärken u. a.; reduzierte Formen obiger und
durch Abspaltung von 1 Mol Wasser aus 2 Carboxyl- anderer Zucker und Polysaccharide, z. B. die so-
gruppen gebildet wird, die sich im gleichen Poly- genannten »Zuckeralkohole« Erythrit, Xylit, Mono-,
carbonsäuremolekül befinden. Anhydride, die durch Di- und Tripentaerythrit, Arabit, Mannit, Idit, Tolit,
Wasserabspaltung aus zwei oder mehreren Molekülen Sorbit, Inosit, Dulcit u. a.~, die oxydierten Derivate
der gleichen oder verschiedener ungesättigter Säuren 65 der Zucker, bei denen die Oxydation nicht so weit
entstanden sind, z. B. Acrylsäureanhydrid, gehören durchgeführt worden ist, daß die ursprüngliche Mono-
nicht zu den hier verwendbaren Carbonsäuremono- saccharidkohlenstoffketteneinheit zerbrochen ist wie
meren, weil deren Polymerisate stark dazu neigen, sich bei den Mono- und Dicarbon-»Zuckersäuren«, zu

Ein bevorzugte Klasse von mehrwertigen Alkoholen, die zur Herstellung der monomeren Polyälkenylpolyäther
angewandt wird, ist als Oligosaccharide bekannt, die eine bis vier Monosaccharideinheiten enthalten,
wozu die Zucker selbst, ihre Reduktionsprodukte, z. B. die Alkohole, Ketoalkohole und Aldoalkohole,
und ihre Oxydationsprodukte, in denen die ursprüngliche Saccharidkette erhalten geblieben ist,
wie z. B. die Zuckersäuren, die Ketosäuren, die Aldosäuren u. dgl., gehören. Beispiele für Saccharide dieser
Klasse sind von den Monosacchariden Glucose, Galaktose, Fructose, Sorbose, Rhamnose u. dgl., von
den Disacchariden Saccharose, Arabinose, Maltose, Laktose u. dgl., von den Trisacchariden Raffinose u. a.
Am meisten wird das Disaccharid Saccharose benutzt. Bevorzugt wird als Polyäther ein Polyalkenyläther
eines Oligosaccharids angewandt.
In dem Monomerengemisch sollen die beiden Hauptmonomersubstanzen
in bestimmten Mengen vorhanden sein, die in erheblichem Maße von den Eigenschaften
abhängen, die das Polymerisat haben soll. Zwei Komponenten enthaltende Monomerengemische aus dem
Carbonsäuremonomeren und dem Polyalkenylpolyäther mit mehr als 50 bis 70 Gewichtsprozent PoIyalkenylpolyäther
polymerisieren sich mit freien Radikale liefernden Katalysatoren nicht leicht und ergeben
im allgemeinen schlechte Ausbeuten. Aber kleinere Mengen des Polyalkenylpolyäthers mischpolymerisieren
sich ziemlich leicht mit Carbonsäuremonomeren; dabei ist der Vernetzungseffekt des Polyalkenylpolyäthers
auf das Carbonsäuremonomere so stark, daß bereits 0,1 Gewichtsprozent desselben, bezogen auf die
gesamte Mischung, eine starke Herabsetzung der Löslichkeit des Polymerisats in Wasser und Lösungsmitteln
hervorbringen. Schon mit 0,2 bis 0,5 Gewichtsprozent des Polyäthers werden Polymerisate mit
weniger als 5 bis 10 Gewichtsprozent an mit Wasser extrahierbarem Material erhalten. Bei Verwendung
von 0,1 bis 4,0, vorzugsweise 0,2 bis 2,5 Gewichtsprozent des Polyäthers werden — insbesondere mit
Aerylsäuren — wasserunlösliche Polymerisate erhalten, die — insbesondere in Form ihrer einwertigen
Salze — außerordentlich wasserempfmdlich sind und infolge Absorption des Vielhundertfachen ihres eigenen
Gewichts an Wasser aufquellen. Wenn 0,1 bis 6,0, vorzugsweise 0,2 bis 2 Gewichtsprozent des Polyäthers
mit Maleinsäureanhydrid mischpolymerisiert werden, werden ebenfalls stark quellende Polymerisate erhalten.
Derartig niedrig vernetzte Polymerisate sind künstlichen gummiähnlichen Stoffen stark überlegen,
die sich in schleimigen Zusammensetzungen als Ersatz für natürliche Gummen, z.B. von Tragantgummi usw.,
eignen. In den Abmessungen beständige, nur geringfügig quellende Polymerisate werden aus Acrylsäuren
und Maleinsäureanhydrid mit nur 5 bislO Gewichtsprozent
Polyalkenylpolyäther erhalten. Diese wenig quellenden Polymerisate besitzen eine außerordentlich
hohe Kapazität als Ionenaustauschharze. Man benutzt hierfür vorzugsweise nicht weniger als 5 und nicht
mehr als 30 Gewichtsprozent des Polyalkenylpolyäthers, am besten 10 bis 20 Gewichtsprozent; diese
Mengen schwanken etwas mit dem jeweils angewendeten monomeren System. Bei einem aus zwei Komponenten
bestehenden Mischpolymerisat bedeutet das, daß der Rest des Monomerengemisches aus dem Carbonsäuremonomeren
besteht. Man kann andere Mengenverhältnisse anwenden, wenn man Polymerisate mit anderen
neuen und wertvollen Eigenschaften herstellen will. Die bei der Herstellung von Vielkomponentenmischpolymerisaten
zu benutzenden Monomeranteile können in ähnlicher Weise schwanken. Da jedoch das Quellungsvermögen
(bzw. der Ouellungsindex) des niedrig vernetzten Polymerisats und auch die Ionenaustauschkapazität
der in den Abmessungen beständigen Polymerisate von dem Carboxylgruppengehalt des Polymerisats
abhängen, ist es im allgemeinen erforderlich, so viel von dem Carbonsäuremonomeren oder den
Carbonsäuremonomeren und so wenig von den anderen Monomerbestandteilen zu benutzen, als mit der geforderten
Wasserunlöslichkeit und den anderen erwünschten Eigenschaften vereinbar ist. In diesen
Mischpolymerisaten soll das Carbonsäuremonomere bzw. sollen die Carbonsäuremonomeren daher niemals
weniger als 25, vorzugsweise nicht weniger als 40 Gewichtsprozent der Gesamtmonomerenmischung
ausmachen. Vielfachkomponentenniischpolymerisate können aus Monomerengemischen hergestellt werden,
die 25 bis 95% eines Carbonsäuremonomeren, z. B. Acrylsäure, 0,1 bis 30% eines Polyalkenylpolyäthers,
z. B. eines Polyallylpolyäthers der Saccharose, und 5 bis 75 % eines oder mehrerer weiterer Monomeren enthalten.
Als Ionenaustauschstoffe werden vorzugsweise Tripolymerisate angewandt, die aus Drei-Komponenten-Gemischen
hergestellt werden, die 40 bis 80 Gewichtsprozent Acrylsäure, 10 bis 20% eines Polyallylpolyäthers, z. B. Saccharose, und 10 bis
50 Gewichtsprozent eines weiteren Monomeren, z. B. von Styrol, Methacrylamid, Maleinsäureanhydrid
u. dgl., enthalten. Als in Wasser quellfähige künstliche Gummen werden besonders Tripolymerisate verwendet,
die durch Polymerisation von Monomerengemischen entstehen, die 40 bis 95 Gewichtsprozent
Acrylsäure, 0,20 bis 2,5 Gewichtsprozent eines Polyallylpolyäthers, z. B. der Saccharose, und 4 bis 59%
eines weiteren Monomeren oder weiterer Monomeren, z. B. Maleinsäureanhydrid, N - Methylacrylamid,
Methylvinyläther, Äthylvinyläther, n-Butylvinyläther
u. dgl., bzw. Gemische aus Maleinsäureanhydrid, einem Vinylalkyläther, z. B. Vinylmethyläther, und
einem Polyallylpolyäther, enthalten, in denen die Summe der Mole Vinylmethyläther und Polyallylpolyäther
praktisch der molaren Menge angewandten Maleinsäureanhydrids entspricht. Mit Bezug auf die
obigen Mengenangaben ist es selbstverständlich, daß bei einer maximalen Menge von zwei der Monomeren
etwas geringere als maximale Mengen der anderen Monomeren angewandt werden müssen.
Als zusätzliche Monomeren bei der Herstellung der Vielkomponentenmischpolymerisate in der oben
beschriebenen Weise eignen sich monoolefinische Monomere, z. B. Styrol, die Chlor- und Äthoxystyroleusw.,
Acrylamid, N-Methylacrylainid, N,N-Dimethylacrylamid,
Acrylsäurenitril, Methacrylsäurenitril, Methylacrylat, Äthylacrylat, 2 - Äthylhexylacrylat,

Vinylidenchlorobromid, Vinylcarbazol, Vinylpyrrolidon, Methylvinyläther, Äthylvinyläther, n-Butylvinyläther,
Methylvinylketon., Äthylen, Isobutylen, Dimethylmaleat, Diäthylmaleat und viele andere. Neben
den obenerwähnten monoolefinischen Monomeren können viele der Divinyl-, Dialkenyl- oder anderen
polyfunktionellen Ester, Amide, Äther, Ketone u. dgl. bei der Herstellung von Vielkomponentenmischpolymerisaten
benutzt werden, besonders jene polyfunktionellen Monomeren, die als Vernetzungs- oder unlöslichmachende
Monomeren fungieren, die aber leicht zu Hydroxyl-, Carboxyl- und anderen hydrophilen
Gruppen verseift und hydrolysiert werden. Von den genannten zusätzlichen Monomeren hat sich Styrol

Der Rückstand ist ein Polyallylpolyäther der Saccharose, der laut Analyse im Mittel 5,6 Allylgruppen
und 1,97 Hydroxylgruppen je Molekül enthält (Brechungsindex nf =1,920). Die Ausbeute beträgt
91 %. Andere, auf ähnliche Weise synthetisierte Polyallylpolyäther der Saccharose enthalten im Durchschnitt
5,00 bis 6,08 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül.
In einem Ansatzverfahren werden Teile des vorstehend
beschriebenen Polyallylpolyäthers der Saccharose zur Herstellung von Mischpolymerisaten mit
Acrylsäure benutzt. Angewandt wurden:

Die Reaktionen werden in einem geschlossenen Behälter bei 75° C durchgeführt. In jedem Fall sind
sie in 1,25 bis 20 Sekunden beendet, wonach sich ein fließfähiger Polymerisatschlamm gebildet hat. Das
Polymerisat wird abfiltriert und auf einer Filterpresse mit zusätzlichem Heptan gewaschen und
64 Stunden bei 100° C in einem Trockner bei Luftumlauf getrocknet. Die Ausbeute beträgt etwa 98 Vc.
Die Polymerisate sind sehr fein und gleichmäßig groß und brauchen vor der Verwendung nicht zerkleinert
zu werden.
Die hervorstechendsten Eigenschaften der Polymerisate dieses Beispiels sind außerordentliche Härte
und Unschmelzbarkeit; Unlöslichkeit und Beständigkeit in den Abmessungen in Wasser und den meisten
der üblichen Lösungsmittel, z. B. Benzol, Toluol, Heptan, Aceton, Dioxan u. dgl. Die Polymerisate
werden mit einem bekannten Überschuß einer wäßrigen NaOH geschüttelt; zur Erreichung des
Gleichgewichts sind etwa 4 Stunden erforderlich. Ein aliquoter Teil der verbleibenden freien Flüssigkeit
wird dann mit einer Standardsäure zurücktitriert, um das Kationenaustauschvermögen des Harzes zu
bestimmen. Die auf diese Weise bestimmte gesamte Kationenkapazität beträgt 11,03 mVal Natrium je
Gramm Polymerisat. Die H-Form-der so erhaltenen Acrylsäure-Allylsaccharose-Mischpolymerisate wird
leicht regeneriert, wenn man sie in eine wäßrige Salzsäure oder Essigsäure eintaucht, ohne daß das Kationenaustauschvermögen
nach vielen Alkalisierungen und Säureregenerationen merklich abnimmt. Polymerisate
von stark verbesserter Gleichmäßigkeit und mit anderen erwünschten Eigenschaften werden erhalten,
wenn man die Allylsaccharose während der Reaktion in das als Medium dienende Hexan hineingibt.
Die aus der Allylsaccharose mit 5,6 Allylgruppen je Molekül (wie vorstehend beschrieben) hergestellten
Polymerisate besitzen auch bei pH-Werten unter 7,0 eine hohe Kapazität. Die niedriger vernetzten Acrylsäure-
Allyleaccharose-Mischpolymerisate haben höhere Kationenaustauschkapazitäten, insbesondere bei einem
pH von 6 bis 8, als das obengenannte, in den Dimensionen
stabile Mischpolymerisat.
Es wird eine Reihe von Mischpolymerisaten aus Acrylsäure und geringeren Mengen Allylsaccharose
als in den vorhergehenden Beispielen hergestellt. Das Reaktionsgemisch hatte folgende Zusammensetzung;

Von der Allylsaccharose werden 0,4 0,7,1,0 1,5 und

angewandt. Die Reaktionen werden stets bei 50° C in geschlossenen Gefäßen durchgeführt. Die erhaltenen
Produkte sind etwas zähe, kautschukartige Gele, die in Alkali mazerisiert werden, um zu dem zu 75%
neutralisierten Natriumsalz zu gelangen. Ein Teil des 1,5% Allylsaccharose enthaltenden Mischpolymerisats
wird ferner mit 0,75 Äquivalenten und 0,10 Äquivalenten Calciumhydroxyd in das gemischte Salz
übergeführt. Etwa 0,5 g eines jeden polymeren Salzes werden zu 500 ecm destilliertem Wasser in ein 500-ccm-Meßgefäß
gegeben und 24 Stunden stehengelassen. Das absorbierte Wasser wird aus der Differenz
bestimmt, wenn das Gel in einem mit einem Glaswollepfropfen versehenen Trichter abfiltriert
worden ist. Der Ouellungsindex wird dann als das Gewicht des gequollenen Gels zu dem des getrockneten
polymeren Salzes berechnet. Es ergibt sich bei dem 1,5% Allylsaccharose-Mischpolymerisat nach diesem
Verfahren zu 600. Die anderen Mischpolymerisate dieser Reihe haben niedrigere Quellungsindizes zwischen
140 und 450. Beim Vergleich mit dem Quellungsindex von Tragantgummi, der 164 beträgt,
erkennt man, wie günstig diese Werte sind.'
Das 75 %-Natriumsalz und die 75/10-Natrium-Calcium-Salze
des 1,5% Allylsaccharose enthaltenden Mischpolymerisats des obigen Beispiels werden mit so
viel Wasser gemischt, daß Mischungen mit 0,5, 1,0 1,5 und 2% des Salzes entstehen, die über Nacht
quellengelassen und dann in einem Mörser verrieben werden, bis glatte Dispersionen erhalten werden. In
ähnlicher Weise wird ein 2%iger Schleim aus hochwertigem Tragantgummi hergestellt. Die Viskositäten
der erhaltenen Schleime werden dann mit Hilfe des Spindelviskosimeters nach B rook field bei 6 Umdrehungen
je Minute bestimmt.

Man sieht, daß sowohl das Natrium- als auch die Natrium-Calciumsalze des Acrylsäure-Allylsaccharose-Mischpolymerisats
viskosere Schleime bilden als Tragant. Aus diesem Grunde wird nur die Hälfte oder noch weniger des Mischpolymerisats benötigt,
um schleimige Zusammensetzungen von gleicher Viskosität zu erzeugen.

Die Reaktion wird in jedem Fall in einem geschlossenen Gefäß bei 500C durchgeführt. In 3 bis
30 Stunden werden Ausbeuten von 80% oder mehr erhalten. Stets entsteht ein voluminöses, aber unlösliches
Gel, das aus dem Reaktionsgefäß wie ein Schmierfett ausgestoßen werden kann. Die polymeren
Gele werden leicht mazerisiert, getrocknet und dann in einer Hammermühle zu einem feinen Pulver
(0,15 mm oder darunter) vermählen. Im folgenden werden die polymeren Salze hinsichtlich ihres
Quellungsindexes und in einigen Fällen hinsichtlich ίο ihrer Schleimviskosität verglichen.

Die vorstehenden Polyallyläther sind auch in größeren Mengen von 10 bis 25% zur Herstellung
von praktisch unlöslichen Acrylsäuremischpolymerisaten anwendbar, die in sehr geringem Maße quellen
und ein Kationenaustauschvermögen zwischen 11,0 und 12,0 mVal Natrium/g haben.
In den vorhergehenden Beispielen sind die Polymerisate nach Ansatzverfahren hergestellt worden.
Mischpolymerisate aus Acrylsäure und Allylsaccharose (mit 6,08 Allylgruppen je Molekül; nf = 1,4895)
werden hergestellt, indem eine 1/1-Hexan-Heptan-Mischung
in Gegenwart von 0,75 Gewichtsteilen Caprylylperoxyd je 100 Gewichtsteile der Monomeren
am Rückfluß erhitzt wird, wobei 10% der Allylsaccharose mit der Acrylsäure aufgegeben werden,
während die restlichen 90% während des Reaktionsverlaufs ununterbrochen zugegeben werden. Bei jedem
Versuch wird die Allylsaccharose in 60 bis 85 Minuten und während eines anschließenden 15 Minuten
währenden Kochens am Rückfluß zugegeben. In allen Fällen liegt die Ausbeute bei einer Kochzeit von 75
bis 100 Minuten am Rückfluß zwischen 80 und 93%. Der erhaltene feine Polymerisat-Lösungsmittel-Schlamm
wird dann mit zusätzlichem Lösungsmittel verdünnt, um die Filtration zu erleichtern; danach
wird das Polymerisat auf der Filterpresse mit weiteren Mengen Lösungsmittel gewaschen. Nach der
Ofentrocknung werden feine, gleichmäßige, leicht zerreibbare Pulver erhalten.
Mischpolymerisate aus Acrylsäure und Monomeren vom Typ der Allylsaccharose können auch durch
Lösungspolymerisation in Benzol hergestellt werden. Das Reaktionsgemisch besteht aus:

Die Polymerisation wird unter Eigendruck bei 500C durchgeführt. Stets ist das Produkt ein feines,
leicht zerreibbares Pulver von weniger als 0,044 mm Teilchendurchmesser. Die Polymerisate in Säureform
werden zuerst vom Lösungsmittel befreit, dann in Wasser gequollen, in das 75 %-Natriumsalz übergeführt
und schließlich zu glatten Schleimen verrieben. Die Viskosität dieser Schleime ist folgende:

Die Polymerisate in der Säureform haben in destilliertem Wasser einen zwischen 53 und 224 schwankenden
Ouellungsindex, während ihre partiellen Natriumsalze Ouellungsindizes aufweisen, die bis zu
drei- bis viermal so groß sind.
Es werden nach dem Ansatzverfahren in Benzollösung unter Benutzung erhöhter Mengen Allylsaccharose
als Vernetzungsmittel Mischpolymerisate hergestellt, um zu bestimmen, wie niedrig das Verhältnis
von Allylsaccharose zu Acrylsäure sein muß,
um stark quellende Polymerisate zu erhalten. Die Ergebnisse sind folgende:

Die Polymerisation ist bei 50° C in etwa 20 Stunden beendet. Das Polymerisat wird in Form eines
außerordentlich feinkörnigen Lösungsmittelschlammes erhalten, der vor der Filtration mit zusätzlichem
Hexan verdünnt und auf einer Presse gewaschen wird. Nach der Ofentrocknung wird ein sehr voluminöses,
leicht zerreibbares Pulver erhalten, das leicht auf der Kugelmühle auf 0,15 bis 0,044 mm
Teilchengröße und darunter zerkleinert werden kann. Wenn man diese Tripolymerisate in Wasser quillt
und in das 75 %-Natriumsalz überführt, zeigen sie Quellungsindizes von 175, 130 bzw. 75. Ein in ähnlicher
Weise aus einem Gemisch von 41,5% Acrylsäure, 54,5 Vo Styrol und 3,8% Allylsaccharose her-
gestelltes Terpolymerisat hat, wenn man es in eine 2%ige wäßrige Dispersion seines Natriumsalzes
überführt, eine Viskosität von 80 Poise. Diese Zahlen sind im Hinblick auf die verhältnismäßig großen
Mengen hydrophoben Styrols in dem Polymerisat
ganz überraschend.
In den vorhergehenden Beispielen ist als Carbonsäuremonomeres
eine einzige Säure, nämlich Acryl-
säure, angewandt worden. Gemische, die außer Acrylsäure ein polymerisierbares Dicarbonsäureanhydrid
enthalten, haben eine größere Zahl Carboxylgruppen (und deshalb eine höhere theoretische Ionenaustauschkapazität)
als die vorhergehenden Mischpolymerisate
mit Acrylsäure als dem alleinigen Carbonsäuremonomeren. Es werden Gemische von Acrylsäure,
Maleinsäureanhydrid und dem Polyallylpolyäther der Saccharose, der 6,08 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül
enthält, in 880 Teilen Benzol je 100 Teile Monomeres
bei 50° C polymerisiert.

Mischpolymerisate können aus Acrylsäure und anderen Monomeren hergestellt werden, die andere
hydrophile Gruppen als Carboxylgruppen einführen oder bei denen die Polymeren nach der chemischen
Behandlung solche anderen Gruppen enthalten. Wenn z. B. Acrylsäure mit Divinyläther vernetzt wird, entsteht
ein gelähnliches, unlösliches Polymerisat, das beim Stehen in Wasser allmählich in Lösung geht
und damit erkennen läßt, daß es außer den carboxylischen Hydroxylen noch alkoholische Hydroxylgruppen
enthält. Es muß angenommen werden, daß dieses Phänomen durch Hydrolyse bzw. Zerstörung
der Divinyläthervernetzungen unter Bildung von Hydroxylgruppen zustande kommt. Das Vorhandensein
von alkoholischen Hydroxylen wird in unlöslichen Tripolymerisaten von Maleinsäureanhydrid
oder Acrylsäure, Divinyläther und Allylsaccharose
festgestellt, aber diese Tripolymerisate bleiben so gut wie unlöslich in Wasser, weil die Polyallylsaccharosevernetzungen
beständig sind. Diese hydrolysieren unlöslichen Tripolymerisate mit 0,5 bis 1% Allylsaccharose
bilden besonders gute viskose Schleime.
Wenn diese Tripolymerisate bis zu 10% Allylsaccharose enthalten, so daß sie nicht mehr quellen,
sind sie ausgezeichnet wirkende Ionenaustauschharze. Eine Reihe von Tripolymerisaten wurde wie folgt
hergestellt:

Die Reaktionen werden bei 50° C unter Eigendruck durchgeführt. Die Ausbeute schwankt zwischen 86%
beim Polymerisat III und 96,5% beim Polymerisat II. In jedem Fall wird der Polymerisatschlamm filtriert,
der Filterkuchen mit Benzol gewaschen und dann getrocknet. Beim Einbringen in Wasser über Nacht
geht das Polymerisat V völlig in Lösung, während alle anderen vollständig ungelöst bleiben. Die Polymerisate
I bis IV werden in Wasser hydrolysiert, bleiben jedoch ungelöst. Kleine Mengen Natriumoder
Ammoniumhydroxyd oder einer starken Säure, wie z.B. HCl, beschleunigen die Hydrolyse. Durch
Infrarotanalyse des Polymerisats werden nichtcarboxylische Hydroxyle festgestellt.
Im folgenden wird die Viskosität von Schleimen angegeben, die aus den 75 °/o-Natriumsalzen der
obengenannten Polymerisate I bis IV hergestellt werden.
2 Mol Maleinsäureanhydrid reagiert, um nach der Hydrolyse ein in hohem Maße hydrophiles, aber
unlösliches Polymerisat zu ergeben.

In den Beispielen 7 und 8 erkennt man, daß Maleinsäureanhydrid dazu neigt, ein wechselndes
Mischpolymerisat zu erzeugen, so daß man zwecks Erreichung hoher Ausbeuten notwendigerweise (um
ein stark quellendes Polymerisat oder ein Ionenaustauschharz von hoher Kapazität zu erhalten) eine
wesentliche Menge eines dritten Monomeren anwenden muß, um die vollständige Umsetzung des
Maleinsäureanhydrids zu gewährleisten. Hier scheint Divinyläther ein ausgezeichnetes Monomeres abzu
geben, weil jedes Molekül dieser Verbindung mit In jedem Fall werden in 4 bis 20 Stunden bei
500C durch diese Polymerisation feine Polymerisatschlämme
erhalten. Beim Quellen in Wasser und Überführen in das 75%-Natriumsalz werden außerordentlich
viskose Schleime gebildet. Die Polymerisatsalze werden dann in einer wäßrigen Mineralölemulsion
auf Suspensionsbeständigkeit geprüft. Durch Zentrifugieren dieser Ölemulsion wird festgestellt,
daß Tripolymerisate von_ Acrylsäure, Vinylacetat, Polyallylsaccharose mit 10 bis 25% Vinylacetat eine
gute Suspensionskraft für Öle u. dgl. in Autopoliermitteln, Reinigungsmitteln u. dgl. haben.
Unter Verwendung von Vinyl-n-butyläther, Vinyläthyläther
und N-Methylacrylamid als drittem Monomeren werden weitere Tripolymerisate aus Acrylsäure
und Allylsaccharose nach folgendem Schema hergestellt:

Mit abnehmendem Verhältnis von Acrylsäure zu N-Methacrylamid bis auf 1:1 ergibt sich eine sehr
geringe Wirkung auf die Viskosität; unterhalb dieses Verhältnisses sinkt die Viskosität aber plötzlich ab.
Bei dem Vinyläther sinkt die Viskosität mit zunehmenden Äthermengen langsam.
Das überraschende Merkmal der Tripolymerisate des Beispiels 10 jedoch ist die stark hydrophile Wirkung
der nichtcarboxylischem Hydroxyle und Amidgruppen. Die hydrophile Kraft der Amidgruppe hängt
jedoch bis zu einem gewissen Grade von der Struktur des Amidmonomeren ab. Tripolymerisate mit Methacrylamid,
das genau das gleiche Molekulargewicht wie N-Methylacrylamid hat, sind bei der Anwendung
in Schleimen nicht ganz so gut. Eine Reihe von Methacrylamid-Tripolymerisaten, die mit der gleichen
Menge (lfl/o) Polyallylsaccharose wie im Beispiel 10 vernetzt sind, werden in Schleime des 75%-Natriumsalzes
übergeführt, die folgende Eigenschaften zeigen:

Die Monovinylalkyläther ergeben mit Maleinsäureanhydrid ebenfalls unlösliche, hydrolysierbare Polymerisate,
wie das Carbonsäuremonomere und Allylsaccharose (mit 6,08 Allylgruppen je Molekül) als
Vernetzungsmonomeres. Die Polymerisationen werden stets bei 500C in 880 Teilen Benzol je 100 Teile
Monomeren bei Anwendung von 2 Gewichtsteilen Benzoylperoxyd als Katalysator durchgeführt. Folgende

Die leicht zerreibbaren trockenen Polymerisate bilden in wäßrigem Alkali viskose Schleime. Das
Tripolymerisat vom Typ III, das mit 1,0 Gewichtsteilen Allylsaccharose hergestellt wird, hat folgende

Bildung des Halbesters oder des partiellen Amin-Amid-Salzes
modifiziert, besitzt es drei Merkmale; es verdickt, suspendiert (Festkörper) und emulgiert
(Öle oder Flüssigkeiten). Polier- und Reinigungsmittel, z. B. Auto- und Möbelpoliermittel (in Emulsions-
oder Salbenform), enthalten Scheuermittel, wie z. B. feinen Ton oder Diatomeenerde, und Poliermittel,
ζ. B. ölige Kohlenwasserstoffe, Pflanzenöle, Wachse bzw. Wachslösungen u. dgl. Wenige Dispergier-
und Suspendiermittel des Handels haben die Fähigkeit, mit diesen sehr verschiedenartigen Bestandteilen
beständige Dispersionen der gewünschten Viskosität zu bilden. Es ist zweckmäßig, bei diesen Zusammensetzungen
eine Kombination von einem oder mehreren oberflächenaktiven Mitteln mit Verdickern,
wie z. B. Tragantgummi, anzuwenden. Wenn jedoch ein Teil des benzolhaltigen Reaktionsschlammes des
Polymerisats III des Beispiels 11 mit 2 Äquivalenten Methanol (bezogen auf den Carboxylgehalt) gemischt
und 24 Stunden auf 50° C erhitzt wird, entsteht ein unlöslicher, feinteiliger polymerer Halbester, der vor
Gebrauch nur mit Benzol gewaschen und anschließend vom Lösungsmittel befreit zu werden braucht. Der
Halbester wird zuerst in wäßrigem Alkali gequollen und dann geschüttelt, um den üblichen wäßrigen
Schleim des 75 °/o-Natriumsalzes zu-erhalten. Die Viskosität
des Schleimes ist von der gleichen Größenordnung wie die des unmodifizierten Maleinsäureanhydrid-
Vinylmethyläther-Tripolymerisats. Wenn jedoch eine kleine Menge (d. h. 5 bis 20 °/o) eines gereinigten
Mineralöls zu dem Schleim gegeben und mit ihm dispergiert wird, tritt unter Bildung einer beständigen
Öl-in-Schleim-Dispersion mit einer Viskosität von über 1000 Poise eine erhebliche Verdikkung
ein. Nur 0,38 Gewichtsprozent des polymeren Halbestersalzes sind zur Bildung eines glatten cremeartigen
Autopolier- und Reinigungsmittels, das Diatomeenerde als Scheuermittel und ein Gemisch von
Kerosen und Mineralöl als Poliermittel enthält, erforderlich. Die erhaltene Emulsion-Suspension ist so
beständig, daß sie keine Abtrennung von Öl oder Diatomeenerde zeigt, wenn sie 3 Minuten mit 2000 Umdrehungen/Minute
zentrifugiert wird. Im Gegensatz dazu sind 0,75 Gewichtsprozent oder mehr Tragantgummi
zusammen mit anderen Dispergiermitteln erforderlich, um ein ähnlich zufriedenstellendes Stoffgemisch
zum Reinigen und Polieren zu bilden. Wenn der Allylsaccharosegehalt auf 3 bis 6% erhöht wird,
wird die Emulsion-Suspension sogar noch viskoser und weist eine höhere Streckgrenze auf.
Die dreifache Wirkung des Verdickens, Suspendierens - und Emulgieren;?... dieser Polymerisate .und
anderer unlöslicher nicht modifizierter Carbonsäurepolymerisate kann vorteilhaft bei der Herstellung von
Textildruckpasten angewandt werden, die unlösliche Farbpigmente und Farbstoffe oder in Lösungsmitteln
lösliche Farbstoffe enthalten. Mischpolymerisatsalze der Acrylsäure und/oder des Maleinsäureanhydrids
und eines als Vernetzungsmittel dienenden Polyallylpolyäthers bilden z. B. Textildruckpasten des Öl-inWasser-
und des Wasser-in-Öl-Typs. Einige dieser Mischpolymerisate können in Textildruckpasten oder
-druckfarben übergeführt werden, die sowohl lösliche als auch unlösliche Farbstoffe enthalten. Kosmetika,
wie z. B. Lotions, Cold-Crenies, Salben, Pudergrundlagen,
gel- oder cremeähnliche Shampoons und andere Mittel, können aus den Polymerisaten der Erfindung
als den einzigen Verdickungs- und Emulgiermitteln hergestellt werden. Weiter können Überzüge aus
natürlichem oder synthetischem Kautschuk oder Harz

jeder gewünschten Viskosität unter Einschluß dicker cremeartiger Hydrogele leicht aus den Salzen der erfindungsgemäßen
Polymerisate durch Zusatz eines Latex oder einer Dispersion des Kautschuks oder Harzes und/oder der Weichmacher, z. B. natürlichem
Kautschuk, Butadien-Styrol-Mischpolymerisat, Butadien-Acrylsäurenitril-Mischpolymerisat,
oder von Polyvinylchlorid und/oder Weichmacher zu einem wäßrigen Schleim nach einem der oben beschriebenen
Verfahren hergestellt werden. Andere Verwendungsmöglichkeiten sind jedem Fachmann geläufig.
Es wird ein Mischpolymerisat hergestellt, bei dem ein chemisches Äquivalentgewicht Maleinsäureanhydrid
je Allyläthergruppe des Allylsaccharosemoleküls angewandt wird. Es wird eine Allylsaccharose angewandt,
die im Durchschnitt 5,0 Allyläthergruppen je
Molekül enthält. Die Polymerisation wird bei 50° C in 880 Teilen Benzol für je 100 Teile Monomeren bei
Verwendung von 1,0 Teilen Azoisobutyronitril als Katalysator durchgeführt. Das Polymerisat ist in
Wasser und Lösungsmittel völlig unlöslich und als Ionenaustauscher anwendbar.
Claims (10)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Mischpolymerisaten mit einer Anzahl Carboxylgruppen oder
Carbonsäureanhydridgruppen in der Kette, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Polymerisation ein
Gemisch aus wenigstens 25 Gewichtsprozent einer niedrigen aliphatischen «,/^-ungesättigten Carbonsäure
oder eines Anhydrids einer niedrigen aliphatischen ungesättigten Polycarbonsäure, 0 bis
75 Gewichtsprozent eines davon verschiedenen monoolefinischen Monomeren, das mit den vorstehend
gekennzeichneten Carbonsäuren bzw. Carbonsäureanhydriden mischpolymerisierbar ist,

eines Polyvinyl-, Polyallyl- oder PoIycrotyläthers eines mehrwertigen Alkohols mit
wenigstens 4 C-Atomen und wenigstens 3 O H-Gruppen im Molekül, welcher Äther wenigstens
2 Vinyl-, Allyl- oder Crotyläthergruppen im Molekül aufweist, unterworfen wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der angewandte Polyäther ein Polyalkenyläther
eines Oligosaccharide ist.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß eine monoolefinische Acrylsäure der
Formel CH2 = CR-COOH, in der R Wasserstoff,
Halogen oder ein einwertiger Alkyl-, Aryl-, Aralkyl-, Alkaryl- oder cycloaliphatischer Rest ist,
und ein Polyallylpolyäther eines Oiigosaccharids mit wenigstens 2Alkyläthergruppen je Molekül
miteinander polymerisiert werden.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß eine monoolefinische Acrylsäure der
Formel CH2 = CR - COOH, in der R Wasserstoff,
Chlor, Brom oder ein einwertiger Alkyl-, Aryl-, Aralkyl-, Alkaryl- oder cycloaliphatischer
Rest ist, mit 0,1 bis 30 Gewichtsprozent, auf Gesamtmonomeren bezogen, eines Polyallylpolyäthers
eines Oiigosaccharids mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül polymerisiert werden.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Monomerengemisch aus 25 bis
95 Gewichtsprozent Acrylsäure, 0,1 bis 30 Gewichtsprozent eines Polyallylpolyäthers eines
Oiigosaccharids mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül und 5 bis 75 Gewichtsprozent eines
weiteren monoolefinischen Monomeren polymerisiert wird.
6. Verfahren naeh Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Maleinsäureanhydrid, ein Vinylalkyläther
und ein Polyallylpolyäther eines Oiigosaccharids mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül
polymerisiert werden, wobei die Summe der Mole Vinylalkyläther und Polyallylpolyäther praktisch
der molaren Menge angewandten Maleinsäureanhydrids entspricht. ;
7. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Monomerengemisch aus Acrylsäure
und 0,2 bis 2,5 Gewichtsprozent, auf Gesamtmonomeren bezogen, eines Polyallylpolyäthers
der Saccharose mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül mischpolymerisiert wird.
8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Monomerengemisch aus Acrylsäure
und 10 bis 20 Gewichtsprozent, auf Gesamtmonomeren bezogen, eines Polyallylpolyäthers der
Saccharose mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül mischpolymerisiert wird.
9. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Monomerengemisch aus 40 bis
95 Gewichtsprozent Acrylsäure, 0,20 bis 2,5 Gewichtsprozent eines Polyallylpolyäthers der Saccharose
mit wenigstens 2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül und 4 bis 59 Gewichtsprozent N-Methylacrylamid
bzw. Styrol polymerisiert wird.
10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Monomerengemiseh aus
Maleinsäureanhydrid, Methylvinyläther und einem Polyallylpolyäther der Saccharose mit wenigstens
2 Allyläthergruppen je Molekül polymerisiert wird, wobei die Summe der Mole Vinylmethyläther und
Polyallylpolyäther praktisch der molaren Menge angewandten Maleinsäureanhydrids entspricht.
