Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain homogeneous and stable orientation by providing a shutter plate between a vapor source and a substrate in a manner that the vapor flow from the vapor source enters at specific two angles and providing a device of securing and rotating the substrate at the time of vapor-depositing an orientation treatment layer on the liquid crystal cell substrate. CONSTITUTION:A vapor source 46 containing an evaporating material 45 in a bell- jar is placed on a base plate 50, and a rotator jig 41 holding a liquid crystal cell substrate 42 is provided above the vapor source 46, and is rotated by a motor 55 via a transmission spur bear 51, transmission bevel gears 53a, 53b, and a cross transmission shaft 54. A shutter plate 43 provided with windows 43a, 43b in a manner that the vapor flow 47 from the vapor source 46 deposits on the substrate 42 at 80-85 deg. incident angles theta1 and 55-65 deg. incident angles theta2 is provided. In this way, a layer is first vapor-deposited at 80-85 deg. on the substrate and the 2nd layer is vapor-deposited at 55-65 deg., whereby the pretilt angles of liquid crystal molecules are kept at <=5 deg., and the good display which does not cause reverse tilting when voltage is applied is made obtainable; moreover, mass-productivity is improved.
