Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve display effect ay subjecting one of electrode substrates to an orientation treatment through diagonal vapor deposition at 60 deg. vapor deposition angle and the other substrate to an orientation treatment through diagonal vapor deposition at specific vapor deposition angles. CONSTITUTION:An upper electrode substrate is subjected to an orientation treatment by diagonal vapor deposition at 85 deg. in the direction shown by a solid line 8, and when a lower electrode substrate is subjected to an orientation treatment by diagonal vapor deposition at 60 deg. in the direction of a broken line 9, liquid crystal molecules orient parallel to the vapor deposition direction on the upper electrode substrate surface applied with the orientation treatment by 85 deg. diagonal vapor deposition, at about 20-30 angles to the electrode substrate surface. In the case of using the guest-host liquid crystal of the phase transfer type added with the optical activator of the above-mentioned right hand screw system, the most stable orientation is obtained when the orientation state at the lower substrate is near the initial orientation state of the liquid crystal molecules on the upper substrate and while the liquid crystal molecules are in continuous rotation.
