Abstract

PURPOSE:To arrange uniformly a liquid crystal and pigment molecules in the fixed direction with a small angle of inclination by rubbing in the fixed direction a magnesium fluoride coated film applied on a substrate and by treating the surface with a silane surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A coated film 3 of magnesium fluoride is formed with evaporation on the side where there is a transparent electrode coated film 2 of a glass plate 1. By rubbing in the fixed direction the surface of this magnesium fluoride coated film 3 and further by treating the surface of this coated film 3 with a silane surfactant solution which is dissolved with an organic solvent, a silane surfactant coated film 4 is formed. A pair of electrodes 1,1' which are subjected to this orientation treatment are placed so as to be the parallel in orientation and reverse in direction each other and a mixture solution of a nematic liquid crystal 5 with a negative dielectric anisotropy and a dichromatic pigment 6 is enclosed. With this orientation treatment, a uniform and clear positive type display with large contrast is obtained.
