Abstract
625,787. Rolling. TRIGGS, W. W. (Morgan Construction Co.). May 1, 1947, No. 11752. [Class 83 (iv)] A driving-mechanism, for the rolls 16 of a vertical mill, comprising a bevel gear housing 40, a bevel gear 30 mounted within the housing with its axis vertical, a bevel pinion 35 mounted within the housing and meshing with the gear 30, a pinion housing 27 containing a pair of intermeshing pinions 20, 21 connected to the respective mill rolls 16, one of the pinions 20 being located directly above the gear 30, is characterised by the housing 27 being supported on top of the housing 40, and by a vertically slidable telescopic driving connection between the bevel gear 30 and the pinion 20 so that the pinion housing 27 and the pinions 20, 21 may be lowered as an assembled unit into position on the housing 40. A splined extension 49 of the shaft 23 of the pinion 20 is received in a hollow socket 51 of a spindle 50 mounted within the interior of the bevel gear shaft 31 and keyed thereto by a tongue 53, forming a driving connection between the shaft 31 and the shaft 23, such that extremely accurate alignment of the shafts is unnecessary.
