[Class 83 (iv)] A set of universal rolls 1, 2, 3, 4, are arranged with the minimum spacing between the sets to shorten the left-over thicker end of the rolled tube by eliminating the usual common drive for each set and driving the individual rolls of each set from the corresponding roll of the previous set with the required gear ratio to give the required increase in peripheral speed, thus allowing the individual sets of rolls, (each set conveniently mounted in side plates 5, 6, Fig. 5), to be placed close together in the frame 14-27 when staggered with respect to each other. For example one of a number of driving shafts 26 drives through bevel gears 22, 23 the shaft 16 coupled to one roll 3 while the gear 17 on that shaft 16 coupled through an intermediate wheel 25 drives the gear 18 on the next shaft 16 so driving the roll of the next set at a higher speed. The other rolls are driven through the other shafts 26. The top 27 of the mill frame 27 can be pivoted up to allow changing of the roll sets as one unit, the shafts 26 having detachable couplings to allow of them moving too. The pairs of the individual rolls can be adjusted by screw 12 whereby the roll housings 9 can be moved about their pivots 10. Instead of gearing 17, 18 the rolls may have independent electric motor drive.
