1,132,224. Rolling mills. DEMAG A.G. 5 Nov., 1965 [7 Nov., 1964], No. 47072/65. Heading B3M. A rolling mill, convertible into a horizontal or a vertical stand, comprises a housing 1, Fig. 6, a driving shaft 17 which drives horizontal spindles 3, 3a through a gear drive 5, 6 and pinions 2, 2a, and which drives vertical spindles 13, 13a through bevel gears 7, 8, and pinions 9, 10, 11, 11a, spindles 3, 3a being adapted for connection to horizontal rolls 4a, 4b, and spindles 13, 13a being adapted for connection to vertical rolls. Spindles 13, 13a are provided with quickacting couplings 14, and these spindles, and also spindles 3, 3a, are movable axially by mechanisms 15, and 15a respectively. The base plate 18 has a vertical portion 18a and this portion, along with the roll stand, have V- shaped recesses (19), Fig. 2 (not shown), which co-operate with V-shaped surfaces (20a) of double acting pistons (20) so as to lock the stand in position for use as a vertical stand. If the stand is operated in the horizontal position, the same kind of clamping means is used in which the pistons are slidable in cylinders (23). A lifting mechanism 24 is provided for adjusting the position of the stand.
