Abstract

1,134,292. Rolling. I. PROPERZI. 28 March, 1967 [26 March, 1966], No. 14114/67. Heading B3M. A continuous rolling mill for rods and wires comprises a series of roll stands 3 each of which receives its drive from a single shaft 4, the various shafts being arranged alternately above and below the rolling line, the end shafts having a single gear and the intermediate shafts having a pair of gears. The mill is driven from a motor with an output shaft 8 which has two gears 9, 10, one of which engages a gear of the shaft adjacent upstream and the other which engages a gear of the shaft downstream. Each of the roll stands is similar to the ones described in Specification 714,737, and the gears are arranged to increase the speed of the rolls progressively through the mill. The gears are positioned in three parallel vertical planes in a housing 13. The output shaft 8 is positioned directly below one of the shafts 4, this shaft only having one gear keyed thereto. The gears are either spur gears or helical tooth gears and are capable of transferring powers over 1000 H.P., e.g. 2000 H.P.
