Driving - g e a r. - Exhaust ports 4 uncovered by the piston of a two-stroke engine are further controlled by a rotary valve 11, so timed that, when the piston, which for this purpose is made shorter than usual, uncovers the ports 4 by its lower end on the up-stroke, the exhaust is closed by the valve 11, and air admitted to the underside of the piston through the inlet ports 2 is retained in the closed lower end 8 of the cylinder and is compressed during the down-stroke of the piston, which is thereby cushioned. The valve 11 also serves to pievent the charge admitted at 2 above the piston, from escaping through the exhaust ports after scavenging is completed, during the up-stroke.
