Valve-gear; regulating.-In an engine having oppositely-moving pistons 26, S, which reciprocate one in the other, long exhaust ports 16 are provided in the wall of the outer piston S so that the burnt gases may commence to escape when the pistons have completed, e.g. one-half their working strokes. Pump charges of combustible mixture are drawn through a valve V into a chamber 32 above the head of the piston S, the compressed charges being transferred to the combustion space C when ports 11 in the wall of the cylinder register with ports 15 adjacent the head 14 of the outer piston. To assist the opening and closing of the valve V, the stem 37 of the valve is formed with yielding fingers which bear upon a spindle 41 carried by the head 14 of the piston S. Frictional contact between the fingers and the spindle opens and closes the valve. To cut a cylinder out of action on a multicylinder engine, the pump admission valve may be held to its seat by a hand-actuated spindle 46 carrying a cam 47 which engages the underside of the valve.
