Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, passages and ports of. - In a two-stroke engine with cylinder of two diameters, a measured volume of compressed charge trapped in. the transfer passages on the previous cycle is admitted for scavenging before the main charge. A two-diameter sleeve valve 4, having the same frequency as, but out of phase with, the main piston, is formed with ports 9, 10 controlling transfer passages 3 in the cylinder and transfer channels 7 in the piston, with exhaust ports 11 controlling cylinder exhaust ports 12, and with ports 14 controlling inlet at 13 to the pump space formed between the enlarged parts of the piston and sleeve. After the mixture charge compressed in the pump has been transferred through the passages 3 with the exhaust closed, both ends of the passages 3 are closed by the valve so as trap the charge therein, this volume of mixture being admitted on the following cycle before the main charge and while the exhaust ports are still open. Air compressed in the annular space 18 between the sleeve and cylinder may be used for scavenging, or this space may be merely vented at 19 to the crank case. The upper ends of the transfer passages 3 are inclined t.n. correspond with the inclination of the combustion head, and the cylinder exhaust ports 12 are arranged intermediate the ends of the transfer passages.
