Blocks acting on drums.-In an internal expamding brake of the type having two brake shoes connected by a floating pivot so that the application of one of the pair is assisted by the frictional reaction on the other, the shoe 7, the application of which is assisted by the shoe 4 during forward travel of the vehicle, is freely hinged to the latter at 8 and is mounted on a fixed pivot 9, on which is also mounted a third shoe 11 adapted to be engaged with the drum by the same cam 6 which actuates the shoe 4. The shoe 11 provides for effective braking during rearward travel of the vehicle. Release of the brakes is effected by a spring 23 extending between the shoes 4, 11, and the clearance of the shoe 7 from the drum may be regulated by an eccentric 18.
