Abstract

244,037. Bendix Brake Co., (Assignees of Dodge, A. Y.). Dec. 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Addition to 236,526. Blocks and shoes; blocks and shoes acting on drums; compensating for wear.-Relates to brakes of the kind described in the parent Specification comprising a pair of articulated shoes, the frictional reaction on one of which is used to effect the application of the other and an independent shoe, and consists in making one of the articulated shoes and the independent shoe of substantially identical construction so that these shoes are interchangeable. The articulated shoes 4, 5 are jointed by a free pivot 1 and the shoe 5 and independent shoe 6 are respectively mounted on fixed pivots 3, 2, the arrangement being such that the shoes 5, 6 and 4, 5 overlap to allow of the extremities 12, 13, 16, 17 of the engaging surface of the shoes being brought close together. The shoes 4, 6 are substantially identical in construction and are of T-section except the parts adjacent the pivots which are forked to embrace the web of the shoe 5 which is entirely of T-section. The shoes are applied to the drum by a cam 20, the shaft of which has a universal joint interposed therein, this joint being mounted on a bracket 31 secured to the cover plate. Release springs 26, 28 are provided, the spring 26 extending obliquely from the shoe 5 to the cover plate so as to hold the head of the pivot 1 against this plate. The hole 21, Fig. 6, in the shoe 4 which in the case of the shoe 6 serves to provide clearance for the pivot 3 is used to accommodate an anti-rattling device comprising a spring 23 extending between the shoe 4 and the cover plate 7. The joint 1 can be adjusted with respect to the drum by means of an eccentric device 25, Figs. 1 and 5. Specification 245,459 is referred to.
