Actuated or applied by running axle or wheel; band; blocks acting on drums. - A brake for vehicles comprises an internal band 17, which is adapted to be expanded into engagement with the brake drum 10 by the circumferential movement of a shoe 24 when the latter is engaged with the drum by a lever 33 acting on it through a shaft 14, eccentric pin 28 and link 26. As the shoe is carried round with the drum, its forward end engages one of two brackets 19<a>, 19<b> carried at the ends of the band, which is therefore expanded, as the bracket not engaged by the shoe abuts against a stop 15. Spring-pressed plungers 29 which enter grooves in the member 15 are carried by the shoe, which limit its clearance and serve to hold it centrally with respect to the drum, whilst the clearance of the band is limited by brackets 22 and screws 23.
