Abstract
296,389. A. C. (Acedes) Cars, Ltd., and Pitt, H. W. May 31, 1927. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; applied by running axle or wheel. - A brake comprises two or more main shoes or pairs of main shoes mounted in the same drum or adjacent drums associated with the same wheel an auxiliary shoe being so mounted upon one of the main shoes as to be moved when applied, by the drag of the brabe drum and thereby to actuate the operating cam of the other main shoe or pair of main shoes. As shown, one pair of main shoes 1, 2 is pivoted at. 5 and is operated by a cam 7, a second pair of main shoes 3, 4 being pivoted at G and operated by a cam 8. Auxiliary shoes 9 are slidably mounted on the main shoes 1, 3 by anti-friction members 10 and are arranged to engage projections 12, 13 on the cams 7, 8 each of which may be provided with an operating arm 14, 15 connected respectively to a hand and a foot lever. If the lever 14 is actuated the shoes 1, 2 are first applied and the auxiliary shoe 9 on the shoe 1 then engages the projection 13 and thus effects the application of the other pair of shoes 3, 4; the auxiliary shoe 9 on the shoe 3 then acts upon the cam 7. By actuating the arm 15 the shoes 3, 4 are first applied and the. shoes 1, 2 are then applied by the servo-action. The shoes may be arranged so that the friction surfaces are in the same circumferential line, the web portions being staggered or the two pairs of main shoes may be disposed side by side. More than two pairs of shoes may be provided each having an auxiliary shoe.
