Abstract

245,459. Bendix Brake Co., (Assignees of Dodge, A. Y.). July 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Blocks and shoes; blocks and shoes acting on drums.-Brake shoes are arranged to overlap adjacent the anchoring points thereof whereby the extremities of the frictional part of the shoes may be brought close together. The invention is shown as applied to the brake described in Specification 236,526. and comprising shoes 3, 5 mounted respectively on fixed pivots 7, 6 and a shoe 2 jointed to the shoe 3 by a free pivot 4. The shoe 5 may also comprise a pair of jointed sections. The shoes are expanded to engage the drum by a cam 9 and are disengaged by springs 10, 11. The web parts of the shoes 3, 5 are extended beyond the ends of the braking surface and overlap as shown. For this purpose the web parts may be offset at the overlapping parts or the extended web part of the one shoe may be forked to receive that of the other shoe. The pivot 6 of the shoe 5 is disposed nearer the centre of the drum than that of the shoe 3 so as to increase its action during the reverse movement of the drum.
