Description

1 00008 AND F. K. LANDGRAF.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented June 28, 1921 Qdgi-OA/NVENTQRS @756 3/14 I Allowzeys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ETHAN I. DODDS AND FREDERICK K. LANDGRAF, 0F PITTBURG-H, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYIBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ETHAN I. Dorms and F REDERICK K. LANDGRAF, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to such as employ a bearing sleeve or bushing in which the head of the bolt is mounted, the object of the invention being to provide a structure in which a bearing sleeve or bushing shall be so mounted on a straight tapering wall of an opening in the boiler sheet, that said sleeve shall be freely movable, and to inclose the outer end of the sleeve and the bolt head mounted in the latter with a cap welded to the boiler sheet.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as here inafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view showing one embodiment of our invention, and Fig. 2 is a view showing another embodiment of the invention.
1 represents the outer boiler sheet and the inner boiler sheet is shown at 2.
The outer boiler sheet is provided with openings such as shown at 3 for the accommodation of the mountings for the headed ends of staybolts such as shown at 4, the inner ends of said staybolts being secured to the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner.
Each opening 3 in the outer boiler sheet is made conical or tapering,-the larger end of said opening being coincident with the outer face of the sheet and the smaller end terminating at the inner face of the sheet, and the wall 5 of said opening is made straight transversely of the sheet from one face to the other thereof.
A bearing sleeve or bushing 6 passes through the opening 3 and, in the embodlment of the invention shown in Fig. 1, this sleeve or bushing is made with an exterior curved, rounded or spheroidal contour, as indicated at 7, havin a free bearing against the transversely straight wall 5 of the taper ing opening 3 in the outer boiler sheet 1. The sleeve or bushing is made interiorly with a seat 8 which constitutes a bearing for the head 4 of the staybolt 4. In the drawing, the head 45 is shown of the spherical type but it is evident that it may be of a different shape and the seat 8 may be made curved or spheroidal to conform to the rounded contour of the bolt head so that the latter may have movement on its seat as is customary in flexible staybolt structures.
To protect against the effects of leakage past the sleeve or bushing, or the mounting of the bolt head therein, we provide a cap or closure 9 which incloses the outer end of the bearing sleeve and also the bolt head. This cap or closure may be made approximately semi-spherical in form and its edge engages the outer face of the boiler sheet 1 around the opening 3 therein. The said cap or closure is fixed to the boiler sheet by means of a weld 10 which surrounds the edge portion of the sleeve or bushing in a manner to integrally unite the same to the metal of the outer boiler sheet.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the sleeve or bushing 6 is made tapering with an exterior wall 11 which is straight lengthwise of said sleeve or bushing and this tapering wall rests against the transversely straight wall of the opening in the boiler sheet. The inner end of the sleeve or bushing 6 may terminate coincident with the inner face of the boiler sheet and its outer end may project beyond the outer face of the sheet, as indicated at 12. The seat 8 for the bolt head may be so located in the sleeve 6 that the bolt head may project above said sleeve or bushing. The outer end of the sleeve or bushing and the bolt head is inclosed by a cap 9 which is integrally unitedto the boiler sheet 1n the manner previously explained.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
.1. In a staybolt structure, the combmation with a boiler sheet provlded with a ner faces of the boiler sheet, a cap inclosing the outer-end portion of the bearing sleeve and the bolt head,'and a Weld integrally uniting the edge portion of said cap and the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet provided with a tapering opening havlng a Wall which is .1 straight from onelface to the other of the sheet, of a sleeve or bushing passing through said tapering opening and provided with an exterior-spheroidal facehavinga free bearing against the straight Wall of .said tapering opening, a staybolt having a head seated in'said sleeve or bushing, a cap inclosing the outer end of the sleeve or bushing and the bolt head, and a Weld integrally uniting said sleeve or bushing and the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, We have signed this specification in the presence of a sub-V scribing Witness.
