STAYIBOL'I s'rrwo'ruan Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed. December 7, 1920. Serial No. 428,967.
To all whom it may concemt:
Be it known that we, JOHN R. FLANNERY and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sa1ne. V
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to such as employ a movable bearing ring on which the bolt head has a movable mounting, one object of the invention being to provide a seatfor said movable bearing ring which shall be an integral part of the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure illustrating an embodiment of our invention and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified, construction.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet. having an opening 2 for the passage of a staybolt 3, the latter having a rounded head 4 at its outer end, and the other end of said staybolt may be connected with the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner.
Near the outer face of the boiler sheet, a groove 5 may be made in the wall of the bolt opening to receive a suitable expanding tool withwhich the metal around the bolt opening will be expanded in a mannerto cause it to project outwardly around the bolt opening and form an annular seat portion 6 having an outer face which may be described as being beveled and is preferably somewhat rounded. A bearing ring 7 is located between this beveled. rounded seat portion and the rounded bolt head 4:, said bearing ring having a beveled, rounded face 8 to move on the seat, and a rounded bearing face 9 on which the bolt head may move.
A sleeve 10 having an internal diameter which is appreciably greater than the eX- ternal diameter of the bearing ring, is mounted on the boiler sheet and is welded thereto, as indicated at 11. The sleeve 10 surrounds the seat portion 6 on the boiler sheet, the bearing ring 7 and the bolt head 4, and is threaded interiorly, as at 12 to receive a hollow threaded closure 14 having an angular head 15. A shoulder 16 is formed in the sleeve 10 and between this shoulder and the inner end of the closure 14, a washer or packing member 17 is disposed.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the beveled rounded seat portion 6 for the bear- .ing ring is cut into the metal of the boiler sheet.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet having a bolt opening and provided with a beveled seat portion forming an integral part of said boiler sheet, a staybolt having a rounded head, a bearing ring movably mounted on said seat portion of the boiler sheet and having a rounded portion receiving the rounded head of the staybolt, and inclosing means for the bolt head, bearing ring and seat portion, said inclosing means being rigidly secured to the boiler sheet around said seat portion,
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, the metal of the boiler sheet around said open ing projecting outwardly and forming a rounded seat surrounding said opening, a staybolthaving a rounded head, a bearing ring having a rounded part movable on said seat portion of the boiler sheet, and inclosing means secured to the boiler sheet around said seat portion.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
- JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY ETHAN I. DODDS.
