UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETHAN I. DODDS AND BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BQLT COMEANY, O1 PZTTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE FOR BOILERS.
Application filed September 10, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ETHAN I. Doons and BENJAMIN E. D. Smrronn, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures for Boilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures'for boilers,-one object of the invention being to so mount the headed end of a stay bolt, preferably of the flexible staybolt type, that the sleeve or bushing in which the head of the bolt has its bearing shall be capable of such univer sal movement that proper and accurate alinement of the staybolt relatively to its connections with the boiler sheets shall be insured; so that the necessity for rounding or curving transversely, the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet in which the sleeve or bushing has its bearing shall be obviated, and to provide simple and eiiicient means for securing the sleeve or bushing to the outer boiler sheet when the same shall have assumed a position to insure proper alinement of the bolt with the points of its connection with respective boiler sheets.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a sectional view showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the angle which the bolt may be made to assume relatively to the boiler sheet, and Fig. 3 is a view showing the employment of a modified form of sleeve or bushi represents an outer boiler sheet, the inner boiler sheet being shown at 2.
The outer boiler sheet 1 is provided with openings 3 for the accommodation of mountings for the heads of staybolts such as indicated at 4-, and the inner boiler sheet is provided with suitable openings through which the inner ends of the bolts may be threaded and their inner extremities upset or other- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.

wise secured againstthe inner face of the inner boiler sheet.
Each opening 3 in the outer boiler sheet is made conical or tapering, the larger end of the opening being coincident with the outer face of the sheet and the smaller end terminating at the inner face of the sheet, and the wall of said opening is made straight transversely of the sheet.
A bearing sleeve or bushing 6 enters the opening 3 and may extend through the same. portion 7 of this sleeve or bushing may be cylindrical in form but the inner end portion 8 is made with a curved, rounded, or spheroidal external contour and has a universally movable mounting on the transversely straight wall 9 of the conical or tapering opening 3 in the boiler sheet. The sleeve or bushing is made interiorly with a seat 10 which constitutes a bearing "for the head at of the staybolt 4. In the drawing, the bolt head d is shown as being of the spherical type, but it is evident that it may be of a different shape as indicated at P Fig. 3, for example, and the seat 10 may be made curved or spheroidal to conform to the rounded contour of the bolt head, so that the-latter may have movement on its seat as is customary in flexible staybolt structures.
When the universally movable sleeve or bushing shall have assumed a position to insure proper alinement of the bolt with the points of its connection with the respective boiler sheets, said sleeve or bushing will be secured to the boiler sheet by welding. The welded union of the sleeve or bushing and the outer boiler sheet is effected with the use of a suitable welding alloy and this alloy is so united to the metal of the boiler sheet and the sleeve or bushing, around the latter, as to provide a weld such as indicated at 11, surrounding the sleeve or bushing and constituting an integral part of the latter and of the boiler sheet.
Instead of making the inner end portion only of the sleeve or bushing rounded or curved, I may make the major portion of said sleeve or bushing with a spheroidal contour as shown at 12, Fig. 3, thus presenting an extended rounded external surface which may have universally movable bearing against the transversely straight wall of the conical opening in the boiler sheet intermediate of the respective ends of said openings.
Patented June 28, 1921.
lVhen the parts shall have been secured in proper adjustment, the bearing sleeve will be closed over the bolt head, by means of a plug or closure 13. The sleeve or bushing may be threaded internally as at 14 to receive the plug or closure (which latter may be formed to receive a suitable wrench) and a washer 15 may be located between the inner end of the plug or closure and a shoulder on the sleeve or bushing. My improvements permit great range of automatic adjustment of the staybolt to compensate for irregularities in alinement of the openingsinthe respective boiler sheets, or when the two boiler sheets are not parallel with each other,-the extent of adjustment in the latter event being represented in Fig. 2. r 7
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is Y 1. 111 a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a tapering 'openlng wlth a transversely straight wall,
of a bearing sleeve having an external por- Having fully described our invention;
tion rounded in the direction of the length thereof and having on said transversely straight wall of said tapering openin means for securing said sleeve or bushing to the boiler sheet, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing sleeve.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a tapering opening with a transversely straight wall, of a bearing sleeve having a portion rounded in the direction of the length thereof and bearing against the transversely straight wall of said conical opening, a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing sleeve, and a weld uniting the boiler sheet to the bearing sleeve or bushing around the latter.
In testimon whereof we have si ned this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
