STAYBOLT STRUCTURE,

l UNITED STATES PIENT OFFICE.
' ETI-IAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
' STAYBOLT' srrnuotrnnn To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citi-' zen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en- 1 able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for steam boilers and more particularly to means for connecting the rounded head of a staybolt with the outer boiler sheet and permanently inclos ing said head and its seat.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and efiicient structure wherein a section of sleeve or bushing threaded through the boiler sheet may be utilized as a bearing member for the head of astaybolt, and to inclose the head of the bolt and its bearing member by a closure rigidly united at its edge directly to the boiler sheet. 7
VVith'this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim. 7
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view illustrating an embodiment of my inventionl 1 represents a portion of a boiler sheet having an opening 2, the wall of which is threaded to receive a threaded bearing sleeve section 3. The sleeve is made interiorly with a concave seat lfor the rounded head 5 of 40 a staybolt 6, and a portion 7 ofthe bore of the sleeve is made tapering to permit lateral play of the bolt. The staybolt may have a tell-tale bore 8 which may extend from the inner end of the bolt to the headed outer end, said bore being made to terminate within the head 5 of the bolt. A slot or recess 9 may be provide-d in the head 5 for the reception of a suitable tool whereby 1919. Serial No. 314,086.
the inner end of the bolt may be screwed through a suitable hole in the inner boiler sheet.
The head of the bolt may project out wardly beyond the plane of the outer face Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d Jul 26, 1921 I Application filed July 29,
oi the boiler sheet and as the telltale bore is accessible from the inner end of the bolt for testing purposes, the head 5 and bearlng sleeve may be covered and inclose-d by a cap or closure permanently united to the boiler sheet. Thus a cap 10 (which may be hemi-spherical in shape) is placed over the head of the bolt and is united to the metal ofthe boiler sheet around and preferably spaced somewhat from the opening through which the sleeve section 3 passes.
"The edge portion of the cap is so unitedto the boiler sheet as to become an integral part 01"- the'metal thereof. This is ilCtmllpanied by welding the edge portlon of the cap to the boiler sheet with the use of a .suitable welding metal and the metal or the weld, indicated at 11, will become an integral part of the cap and of the boiler sheet. Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a boiler sheet havinga threaded opening, of an externally threaded bearing sleeve passing through said opening and having an internal seat for the head of a staybolt, a staybolt having a headed portion entering said sleeve and mounted on the seat therein, a permanent closure consisting of a cap having its edge portion surrounding the opening in the boiler sheet and disengaged from said sleeve, said cap inolosing the bolt head mounted in said sleeve, and a weld around the edge portion of said cap and permanently uniting the latter with the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presenceof two subscribin g witnesses.
