Description

E. l. nouns. STAY BOLT STRUCTURE. APPLICATION FILED APR 26| l Pahted Feb. 4,1919.
I T NESSES lz'orneys TED sTaTas PATEN Tren ETI-IAN YI. DODDS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following toV be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means for closing the outer end of the bearing sleeve, the object of the invention being to provide a structure which will operateto tightly hold the cap or closure in place and insure proper seating thereof regardless of slight irregularities in the bearing surface of said cap or closure or its seat, and which will permit the cap or closure to be quickly removed to expose the head of the staybolt for testing the latter.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of constructionand combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. .Y
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showmg a modication.
1 represents a bearing sleeve adapted to screw through a suitable hole in a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a curved face 2 forming a bearing for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a staybolt 4. The body portion of the bearing sleeve is provided with a sleeve extension 5 and adjacent to the juncture of .said extension with the body portion of the sleeve, a seat 6 is provided for a cap or closure 7. The sleeve extension is made at its outer end portion with internal shoulders 8 so spaced apart as to form recesses 9 between them for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The cap or closure 7 is made in its under face with an annular recess 9 whereby the centering of the cap or closure on its seat will be insured, andthe under face of said cap 0r closure may be made concave to insure suitable clearance for the head of the staybolt. j
An enlar 'ement 10 is formed on the cap or closure T and is made with a partly spherical socket 11 to receive a ball or knob 12 depending from a shank 13 having external left-hand screw threads, said shank being made integral with and projecting inwardly from a cover 14:, and the whole constituting a carrier for the cap or cover 7. The enlargement 10 on the cap or cover is provided in its outer end portion with an annular recess in which a ring 15 of soft metal is located and serves to prevent escape of said cap or cover from its carrier. It will be seen that the loose ball-and-socket connection between the cap and its carrier will permit suilicient movement of the former when the parts are being assembled to insure accurate seating of the cap regardless of slight irre larities which might exist in the bearing ace of said cap or its seat.
The portion 14 of the carrier serves as a cover for closing the outer end of the sleeve extension 5 and is provided with a peripheral flange 16 which freely encircles the end portion of said sleeve extension,-and said flange may be made with a hexagonal or other angular external configuration for the accommodation of a wrench.
- An annular locking member 17 is threaded on the shank 13 of the carrier and is provided with lugs 18 to enter behind the shoulders 8 in the sleeve extension 5 when said locking member is turned. The locking member is also provided with stops 19 to engage said shoulders and limit the turning movement of said locking member.
It is apparent that when the cap and its carrier are turned by application to the cover portion of the carrier, the `lugs of the locking member will move behind shoulders 8 in the sleeve extension until the stops 19 on said locking member engage the shoulders 8,I Further effort to turn the cap carrier will cause relative endwise movement of the locking member and the cap carrier and the cap will be pressed tightly against its seat. It is apparent that by a reversal of the operation above described, the ca will be loosened and said cap, its carrier an locking member may be1 quickly 'removed' to expose the head of the bolt to permit testing of the latter.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the cap or closure is provided with a knob or ball 20 mounted in a partly spherical sprocket in the shank of the cap carrier.
If desired, the sleeve extension in which the closure devices are located, may be made of a separate piece screwed on the body of thebearingl sleeve as indicated at 21, instead of making said sleeve extension integral with the body of the bearing sleeve as shown in Figs. l and 2.
`Having fully described my invention what I claimas new and desire to secure by l Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a cap or closure seated therein, a lcarrier constituting a cover closing the outer end of said sleeve 'and having a threaded shank entering the sleeve, a ball-and-socket connection between said cap or closure and said carrier, and a looking member threaded on said shank and coperable with the bearing sleeve to removably sec-ure the cap and its carrier therein.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combinal tion with a bearing sleeve provided with a sleeve extension having internal shoulders -at its outer end portion, of a cap or closure in said sleeve extension and having a partly spherical socket, a carrier constituting a cover over said sleeve extension and having an externally threaded shank provided with a partly spherical knob loosely mounted in the partlyV spherical socket of the cap or closure, and a locking member threaded "on said shank and having lugs to enterv behind the shoulders in the sleeve extension, Said locking member` also having stops to engage said shoulders.
In testimony whereof, I have Vsigned this V specification in the presence of two subscrib-.y
ing Witnesses. ETI-IAN I. DODDS.
