Description

E. l. DODDS.
sTAYBoLT STRUCTURE.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETI-IAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH,
PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYIBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed August 29, 1919. Serial No. 320,731.
T 0 @ZZ w 7mm t may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-one object of the invention being to provide a simple construction affording a mounting for the headed end of a staybolt of the flexible type in which the curving of the wall of the bolt opening in the boiler sheet is obviated and whereby a separate bearing sleeve or member may be dispensed with and to effectually house or inclose the bolt head and its mounting on the boiler sheet, with the use of a cap or closure welded to the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view showing an embodiment of my invention.
l represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner or lire-box sheet.
The outer sheet l is provided with a bolt opening 3, the wall of which is tapering from the inner to the outer face of the sheet.
That is to say,-the wall of the opening is` made flaring from the outer face of the sheet toward the inner face thereof, and said wall is straight transversely of the sheet from one face to the other.
A staybolt a passes through the opening 3 and is provided with a head la which may be spherical or partly spherical in form. The diameter of the body of the bolt at the neck 5 formed by the juncture of the head, is slightly less than the diameter of the opening 3 at the smaller outer end of said opening', and the bolt head 4 has a movable bearing near said neck against the boiler sheet at the outer, smaller end of the opening 3. The bolt head is thus mounted on the boiler sheet and adequate play for the bolt will be afforded by the tapering form of said opening.
The inner end of the bolt may be secured to the inner boiler sheet 2 in any desired manner.
In order that the bolt head and its mounting` on the boiler sheet shall be effectually inclosed, I employ a cap or closure 6, which may be approximately hemispherical in form and is i'iiedly united to the boiler sheet around the opening therein, by means of a weld 7, the latter effecting an integral union of the cap or closure with the boiler sheet.
A tell-tale hole 8 may be made to extend from the end of the bolt and terminate at its outer end in the headed end of the bolt, for test-ing purposes.
Having -fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet provided with a bolt opening, a bolt having a head mounted on the boiler sheet at the outer end of the opening therein, and a cap or closure inclosing the bolt head and secured to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet provided with a tapering bolt opening, the smaller end of said opening being located at the outer face of the sheet, a bolt having a head mounted on the boiler sheet at the smaller end of said opening, a cap or closure inclosing the bolt head and engaging the boiler sheet around said opening, and a weld eecting an integral union of the cap or closure with the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specication.
ETHAN I. DODDS.
