Description
B. E. D. STAFFORD AND E. I. DODDS. STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- BENJAMIN I). STAFFORD AND ETI-IAN I. DODIJS, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.-
STAYIBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed September 10,-1919. Serial No. 322,878.
T 0 all 7mm it may concern.
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN I). I). STAFFORD and ETHAN I. DODDS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and and has its bearing, one object of the present invention being to provlde a construe-- tion in which a sleeve having a rounded portion may have a universally movable seat on the boiler sheet at one end of the bolt opening in the sheet and which, when properly set or adjusted to insure correct alinement of the bolt with relation to its connections with the respective boiler sheets, may be securely united and fixed to the outer boiler sheet.
A further object is to provide a construction whereby a universally movable or adjustable bearing sleeve is applied to the boiler sheet at the opening from which a threaded bearing sleeve has been removed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of our invention where the bearing sleeve is applied to a boiler sheet from which a threaded sleeve has been removed, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the bearing sleeve applied at a drilled opening in the boiler sheet, said opening having a smooth wall at right angles to the faces of the sheet.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 an inner boiler sheet.
In Fig. 1 the outer sheet is shown as having an opening 3 having a threaded wall and from which a threaded bearing sleeve which had been previously installed, has been removed. The opening 3 serves for the passage of the headed end of a staybolt I, the inner end of which is secured in any suitable manner to the inner boiler sheet 2. The head 4& at the outer end of the bolt may beof the spherical type or otherwise rounded in form as in staybolts of the flexible type, and has a bearing on a curved seat 5 within a bearing sleeve 6. The body portion of the sleeve 6 may be straight as indicated at 7 but its inner end portion is curved or rounded as indicated at 8, the inner face of this curved or rounded portion affording the seat 5 for the head of the bolt and the external curved face 9 being adapted to have a bearing on the boiler sheet.
The curved or rounded inner end portion of the sleeve enters the bolt opening 3 in the boiler sheet, the diameter of which open ing is less than the diameter of the straight portion of the sleeve, and the curved or rounded inner end portion of the sleeve has a universally movable bearing against the boiler sheet at the outer end of the opening 3. The bearing sleeve, being universally movable, will be positioned to insure correct alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets and when such position of the sleeve shall have been accomplished, the sleeve will be permanently fixed and united integrally with the boiler sheet by means of a weld 10 surrounding said sleeve. The outer end portion of the sleeve is threaded to receive a plug or closure 11. In the drawing, the outer end portion. of the sleeve is shown as threaded internally and the plug or closure 11. entering the sleeve.
It will be apparent that when universally bearing sleeves such as shown in the drawing, are to be applied to a boiler sheet which had previously been equipped with threaded bearing sleeves, this may be accomplished by merely removing the threaded sleeves. If desired, however, the opening for the universally movable bearing sleeve 6 may be drilled and of uniform diameter from the outer to the inner face of the sheet as indicated at 12, Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a-bearing sleeve having a rounded inner end portion bearing against the boiler sheet at one edge only of said opening, whereby said bearing sleeve may have initial universal movement, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve.
- 2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet provided with a bolt opening having an approximately uniform diameter from the outer to the inn-erface of the sheet, of a bearing sleeve having a rounded inner end portion entering said opening and bearing against the boiler sheet at one edge only of the opening therein, whereby said bearing sleeve may have initial universalmovement, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve.
3. In a istaybolt structure, the combination with-a boiler sheet having a bolt openingtherein, of a bearing sleeve having a curved inner end portion entering said opening and bearing against the boiler sheet at one edge only ofthe opening therein, whereby said bearing sleeve may have initial universal movement, and a weld surrounding 'said sleeve and integrally uniting the same with the boiler sheet.
In testimon whereof, we have signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
