[0008]
The compound (1) and the polymer (2) have the following characteristics.
(I) Compound (1) does not contain azo, diazo, azoxy and the like which are unstable groups with respect to light and moisture.
(Ii) Compound (1) has an α, ω-alkylene chain between the polymerizable maleimide group and a sterically large liquid crystal skeleton. Since there is no steric crowding, the compound (1) has high polymerization reactivity.
(Iii) Since the polymerization reactivity of the compound (1) is high, a high molecular weight polymer is obtained. As a result, the polymer (2) has high heat resistance and mechanical strength.
(Iv) Since the liquid crystal skeleton is separated from the main chain and is less susceptible to steric hindrance of the main chain, the polymer (2) tends to exhibit liquid crystallinity. As a result, the polymer (2) has a wide temperature range of the liquid crystal phase.
(V) Since the liquid crystal skeleton is stable to light, the polymer (2) is also excellent in light resistance.
Thus, the polymer (2) has excellent physical properties not found in conventional liquid crystalline acrylate polymers.
