Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a carbon nanotube production method and apparatus using a metal-carbon composite cluster.
In recent years, since carbon nanotubes (CNT) have excellent field electron emission characteristics, their application to electron beam sources, nanowiring materials, quantum wire devices, electronic device materials, flat panel displays, etc. has attracted attention.
In addition, a method using a nano-sized porous material such as zeolite as a substrate has been proposed, but the synthesis rate of single CNT is small compared to the whole nanotube.
In addition, although a CNT manufacturing technique using a direct current arc discharge method has been proposed, there is a problem in handling such as a method of using the manufactured CNT in an electronic device (see Non-Patent Document 1).
An object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for realizing thinning of CNT production by using a metal-carbon composite nanocluster as a catalyst.
By using metal-carbon composite nanoclusters as a catalyst, thinning of CNTs is achieved. The metal-carbon composite nanocluster is produced by a direct current arc method using electrical energy. Furthermore, a method by laser ablation using optical energy is also possible.
In the CNT synthesis method, we propose a CNT production method and apparatus using plasma CVD. In plasma CVD, a large area and vertically aligned CNT can be manufactured by using a microwave plasma apparatus.
In addition, the use of lithographic technology makes it possible to control the spatial arrangement of CNTs.
As described above, according to the present invention, it becomes possible to manufacture vertically aligned CNTs by plasma CVD by spatially arranging nanocluster catalysts on a substrate.
Furthermore, by controlling the size of the catalyst nanocluster, it becomes possible to produce a thin CNT with a desired diameter.
