Abstract

Sheet material is made by mixing a thermoplastic particulate resin with a heat-gellable plastisol paste, forming a layer of the mixture, heating to gel the plastisol and set the mixture, and then further heating and pressing. The plastisol is made by mixing a finely divided resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or diethylmaleate, with a plasticizer therefor, e.g. dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates, tricresyl phosphate polymeric ester type plasticizers and other esters of phthalic, adipic, sebacic, azelaic and phosphoric acids. The particulate thermoplastic resin may also be a vinyl chloride polymer and may be made by forming a plastisol of the resin, heating to fuse it and then breaking up the fused product into particles. In preferred processes the particulate resin may be of one or more colours and different effects may be obtained in the finished product depending upon the time in which the resin particles are allowed to stand in contact with the plastisol and absorb plasticizer therefrom; thus flooring material may be produced in which coloured particles are present either in a terrazzo or a spatter pattern.
