Abstract

Expanded polyvinyl chloride is prepared by mixing together polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl ester copolymer in powdered form, a blowing agent liberating nitrogen at an elevated moulding temperature, a volatile plasticizer, and a non-volatile plasticizer, moulding the mixture in a closed mould under pressure by heating at an elevated moulding temperature sufficient to liberate the nitrogen from the blowing agent, cooling and releasing the pressure, and curing and stabilizing by heating at an elevated temperature sufficient to volatilize a major proportion of the plasticizer. Specified vinyl esters are vinyl acetate and butyrate. It is preferred that the powder is fine enough to pass through a 100 mesh screen. Specified blowing agents are diazo-amino-benzene, azo isobutyric dinitrile, dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine, diethyl azoisobutyrate, and 1, 3-bis(xenyl)-triazene. Specified plasticizers are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, mesityl oxide, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and a mixture of naphtha and acetone. Specified non-volatile plasticizers are tricresyl or triphenyl phosphate, dioctyl or ethylhexyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate and methyl abietate. Other resins that may be present in the final composition either through the addition of monomers or polymers to the mixture before moulding or curing are urea-formaldehyde, alkyd resins, acrylic esters, acrylonitrile-butadiene being specified, styrene and polyester resins. Light or heat stabilizers such as basic lead carbonate or silicate or a barium-sodium organic complex, or the phosphates, lubricants such as stearic acid and zinc stearate, blowing agent accelerators, e.g. phthalic anhydride, surface active agents, emulsifying agents, pigments, dyes, fillers, salicylic acid and a polyester glycol plasticizer may also be present. Specification 429,316, [Group V], is referred to.
