In a method of making a laminate suitable for flooring, sections of thermoplastic sheeting are united to a backing sheet with gaps between the sections, a fluid composition or a powder is applied over the sections and excess removed, and the fluid composition or powder is converted into a coherent solid thermoplastic composition by heating and, if necessary, pressure, so as to fill the gaps between the sections with a thickness of thermoplastic material substantially equal to the thickness of the sections. Suitable fluid compositons include vinyl chloride resin paste or plastisol, and if a powder is used it may be a vinyl chloride resin in powder form associated with a plasticizer (e.g. a mixture of dialkyl phthalates in which the alkyl groups have 7 to 9 carbon atoms) and a stabilizer. The thermoplastic sheeting may also be a vinyl chloride resin composition, and the sections may be any shape, or colour including marbled effects. The fluid composition or powder may be differently coloured from the thermoplastic sections or may be transparent or translucent to show the colour of the backing sheet. The backing sheet may also be of vinyl chloride resin composition or other thermoplastic sheeting, or may be of asbestos felt or paper felt in which case an adhesive, such as a dispersion or solution of acrylic polymer or a butadiene-acrylonitrile co-polymer or butadiene-styrene co-polymer or a blend of such copolymers with P.V.C. or polyvinyl acetate, is used to bind the thermoplastic sections to the backing sheet. The vinyl chloride resin used may be a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 938,411.
