Abstract

723,644. Patterned coated fabrics. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Aug. 16, 1951 [Aug. 29, 1950], No. 21297/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] Materials having a thermoplastic resinous surface-layer forming a coloured pattern are produced by applying to selected areas of a supporting material, e.g. textile fabrics, thermoplastic resin sheets, or tiles moulded from fillers and thermoplastic resins, a paste comprising a thermoplastic resin and a plasticizer therefor in which the resin is insoluble at room temperatures, distributing on the paste a granular composition comprising pigment, a thermoplastic resin, and a plasticizer therefor, heating to gel the paste and soften the granules and pressing the hot material. The paste, which may be pigmented, may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride in an ester plasticizer, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, or dibutyl phthalate, gelling at 120-140‹ C. The granular composition, softening at 170-180‹ C. may be made as described in Specification 723,643, [Group IV (a)], by heating a dispersion of the same polymer, as in the paste, in a plasticizer until absorption of the plasticizer occurs without coalescence, and breaking up the cooled composition. Patterns in more than one colour may be obtained by applying paste to the areas corresponding to one colour, distributing granular composition of the appropriate colour thereon, removing excess granules, gelling the paste by heat to anchor the granules, and then applying paste and different coloured granules to further selected areas. Mottled effects may be produced by using mixed coloured granules. The patterns may be applied to a temporary support and transferred to a backing material.
