734,827. Valve gear. VOORHIES, C. Sept. 15, 1952 [May 8, 1952]. No. 20863/54. Divided out of 734,786. Class 7(6). [Also in Group XXIV] A hydraulic tappet comprises a cylinder 39, Fig. 1, closed at one end, a hollow plunger 46 therein having an opening at one end closed by a check valve 49 which is surrounded by a retainer 50 and urged to close by a washer-like spring 53, a spring 51 urging the cylinder and plunger apart, and means for the admission of hydraulic fluid to the interior of the plunger 46. The check valve 49 is provided with a projection which, as described in Specification 734,786, may bottom on the end of the cylinder 39. In Fig. 1 the tappet is situated between a cam 3 and push-rod 31 and the hydraulic fluid is supplied to a reservoir 48 in the plunger 46 when an annular passage 41 in the cylinder passes a supply passage 7. The fluid flows from reservoir 48 past the check valve 49 to the tappet compression space when the plunger and cylinder are moved apart by the spring 51 to take 'up clearance. In a modification, Fig. 6, the tappet is situated between a push rod 65 and valve lever 76 and the hydraulic fluid is supplied through passages 79, 78 in the lever 76 and its pivot shaft 77. The washer-like spring 53 may be slightly curved or may have curved projections as shown in Fig. 2 and the retainer 50 may be provided with a number of slits in its sides.
