587,247. Valves and valve gear. SMITH, W. Oct. 6, 1944, No. 19152. [Class 7 (vi)] A hollow inlet or exhaust valve operated hydraulically is cooled by admitting some of the operating fluid to the interior of the valve. As shown, an exhaust valve 1 is formed by a hollow body 2 which slides in a bore in the cylinder head and is opened by oil pressure generated by a plunger 11 actuated by a valve cam 10 acting on an enlarged head 13 at the end of the valve remote from the valve part. The valve is loaded by a hairpin spring or a leaf spring 8 or by a coiled spring 6 whose ends engage a partition 7 in the valve and a removable cap 5. During operation of the valve some of the oil enters the interior through an annulus 20 and holes 21 between piston rings 19 and cools the valve, excess oil escaping through a hole 22 in the partition and being returned to the sump or lifted to the reservoir around the cams. The liquid column 12 is maintained by providing a passage 17 in the plunger 11 against which a non-return valve 18 seats. Specification 557,815 is referred to.
