Abstract

467,633. Valve gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 14, 1936, No. 34270. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1935. Addition to 464,612. [Class 7 (vi)] The hydraulic slackadjusting device comprised in the parent Specification is modified in that the valve device controlling the flow of fluid to and from the cylinder device is formed separately from, but abuts against, the thrust-transmitting member. The tappet comprises a hollow cylinder 30 in which operates a hollow piston 32, the space between them being filled with oil, which is replenished from passages 72, 70 leading to the space above the piston. When the tappet is resting on the inoperative portion of the cam as shown, the thrust-transmitting member 48 contacting with the stem 16 of the engine valve is raised from a central flange on the piston by a spring 46 acting through the valve device 40 having an extension 38 projecting through the piston flange. Oil then flows from above the piston through passages 44, 42 to replenish the space below the piston. When the cam is operative, the piston is forced thereby into contact with the valve disc 40, thereby shutting off the space beneath the piston. The oil above the piston is prevented from surging up the valve stem 16 by a flanged valve member 62 pressed upwards by a spring 66. In a modification, the supply ports 70, 72 for oil are omitted, and the oil draining through the valve member 62 is used for replenishing.
