Abstract

1,042,771. Valve gear. A. C. SAMPIETRO. June 10, 1963 [June 28, 1962], No. 24890/62. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] In an I.C. engine valve operating gear having a rocker arm 13 supported on a cylinder 23 engaged in a transverse hollow cylindrical portion 22 and carried on an externally splined tube 24 extending through aperture 25, the open end of tube 24 slides in a splined bore in a member 29 forming part of a support 18. A second tube 33, which is located within the bore abutting the support, extends with a close sliding fit into the splined tube, and is connected to a pressurized oil duct 35 which has at its end a one-way valve 36 permitting oil flow into the closed end portion of the splined tube. Each cylinder has four valves operated by four rocker arms 13, each of which is supported on a separate mounting, two of the mountings being secured on each of two longitudinal mountings 18, which extend parallel to the camshaft. Cylinder 23 is retained within cylindrical portion 22 by means of two circlips 20 or the cylinder 23 may project beyond the cylindrical portion 22 at both ends with the circlips engaged in external grooves in the cylinder. OPERATION Pressurized engine oil supplied via passages 35 and 34 to tube 33 unseats valve 36 and oil flows into the closed space at the end of the splined tube 24 forcing the tube 24 downwardly until play is taken up. Where the cam causes the rocker arm 13 to be urged upwardly valve 36 is seated against the end of tube 33 to prevent egress of oil from tube 24.
