Abstract
571,885. Valve gear. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 12, 1943, No. 16710. Convention date, May 1, 1942. [Class 7 (vi)] In a self-adjusting tappet having an oil reservoir 9 at the closed end of a hollow tappet body 8 slidable and rotatable in the tappet guide 5, air &c, which might be trapped in the reservoir escapes through a passage 21 in the wall of the reservoir and so located that it is always masked by the tappet guide 5. Oil is fed through a channel 10 in the guide and an annular groove 11 on the tappet body 8 to the reservoir 9 and as the tappet body approaches the base circle of the operating cam 24, a spring 17, acting between a shoulder on an inner sliding member 14 and the end of a plunger 16 operatively connected to the valve rod 26, urges the tappet head 7 to maintain contact with the cam, the plunger itself being retracted to draw oil from the reservoir past a ball valve 18 to a chamber in front of the plunger. If the tappet is vertical or substantially so, trapped air &c. can escape between the body part 8 and inner member 14 as well as or instead of through the passage 21.
