Abstract

536,674. Valve gear. TOWLER, C. Feb. 17, 1940, No. 3031. [Class 7 (vi)] A tappet comprises telescoping members 10, 19 forming a chamber within them to which oil is supplied, for taking up clearance in the valve gear, by means of a hole 20 formed in a peg 16 attached to the outer member 10 and having a head 17 entering a spiral groove 18 in the inner member 19, the hole 20 communicating with a further radial hole 21 in the peg, through which, when the tappet is inoperative, the oil has access to the spiral groove 18 and the interior chamber. A slight play is provided between the upper edge of the head 17 of the peg and the corresponding face of the spiral groove, so that when the tappet is acted on by the cam 15, the play is first taken up, and the hole 21 for supply of oil is thereby closed. A spring 24 tending to separate the two parts of the tappet also presses a valve 26 to its seat to close an oil passage 29 in the pushrod 25. The inner end of the peg 16 may be inclined to the axis of the tappet, and engage a correspondingly undercut spiral groove, the hole 20 then extending right through the peg, and the hole 21 being omitted.
