[Also in Groups IX, XXXVI and XL (b)] In pneumatic apparatus for testing a yarn 6 during reeling or winding (see Group IX) the running yarn passes over identical orifices 77a, 78a in V guides of gauging heads 77, 78 connected to air-tight chambers supplied with compressed air from a constant pressure source B1 through identical lengths of constrictors 79, 80. A pressure gauge sensitive to differences in pressure behind the two air jets in the heads 77, 78, due to variations in size of a length of yarn over the head 78 and the average size of the running yarn, controls an electronic trigger device (see Group XL(b)) as through a switch arm 84 and contacts 85, 86, or a pneumatic and mechanical device (not shown), for stopping or cutting the yam. In the form of differential gauge illustrated, two pneumatic diaphragms 83 are connected with a small volume chamber behind the test jet at 78a, and with a larger volume chamber behind the head 77, through a capillary tube 82, which controls the rate of damping of rapid pressure variations behind the air jet at 77a, and the diaphragms 83 operate in opposition on the lever 84.
