Abstract

1,187,261. Testing cigarettes. HAUNIWERKE KÍRBER & CO. K.G. 28 Nov., 1967 [10 Feb., 1967], No. 6405/67. Heading A2C. In the testing of cigarettes and the like carried on a rotating drum 1 in which the cigarettes are held in grooves 7 by suction applied through ducts 9 and in which faulty cigarettes are rejected by a blast of air applied through blower ducts 12; in the rejection region the holding suction applied to the ducts 9 is restricted and, when actuated by an electric pulse in response to a detected faulty cigarette, an electromagnetic valve (49) supplies air not only to the blower ducts 12 but also in a restricted amount to the suction ducts 9 thereby strongly reducing or eliminating the holding suction or even producing a slight over pressure. Suction is applied to the ducts 9 via a bore 11 that opens at an end face 14 of the rotating drum 1 and which bore 11 at this end face 14 connects with air control slots in a stationary air control ring 55. Similarly a blower bore 13 connects with a compressed air control slot 76 sited in the rejection region and connected to a air feed supply through the valve 49. This lot 76 is also connected by a restricted duct 75 to a holding suction control slot 69 in this region. The slot 69 is in turn connected to suction control slots 66, 67 on either side of the rejection region by restricted bores 73, 74. The slots 66, 67 directly connect with bores 56, 57 leading to a suction source, whereas the slot 69 receives its suction supply only via the restricted bores 73, 74 from the slots 66, 67. Further bores and slots 65, 72, 71, 78 respectively provide suction to hold the cigarette when first transferred to the drum 1, a vent to release the holding suction when the cigarettes are held by testing-air connecting tubes 23 during testing, a vent following the slot 67, and cleaning air to blow out the ducts 9 and bores 11 after the cigarettes have been transferred from the drum 1 following testing &c. A control slot 88 is concerned with the supply of testing air to the cigarettes. The connecting tubes 23, which form the subject of Specification 1,187,262 divided herefrom, and the testing of the cigarettes in known manner, are also described in detail.
