Abstract

[Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii)] [Also in Group XIX] A device for detecting unevenness of thread, in which a movable feeler rests on the thread in a peripheral groove in a rotatable wheel, is characterized in that the sides of the groove are parallel or substantially so, and the width of the groove is such that flat or other non-circular faults on the thread will be turned edge upwards in the groove to give an appreciable detecting movement to the feeler. As shown, the thread 15 to be tested is drawn by a winding machine (not shown) over a guide bar 16, under a guide sheave 17, along the bottom part of a gauge groove 4 in the periphery of a wheel 1, and under and over guide sheaves 18, 19. Groove 4 is wider than the standard diameter of the thread and has a flared mouth 5. The thin web 7 of a feeler wheel 6 rests on the thread 15, Fig. 4, the feeler wheel being raised by a flat fault in the thread, situated edge upwards in the groove, or by larger faults of substantially circular crosssection which do not enter the groove, but ride around the groove mouth 5. In the latter case, the depth of the groove may be such that the movement of the feeler is greater than the difference in thickness between the normal and the thick part of the thread. Upward movement of wheel 6 raises lever 11, adjustably pivoted at 12, to free a projection 27 on a sleeve 24 which slides on a rod 20 under the action of a spring 28 to cut the thread between the co-operating edges of slots in rod 20 and sleeve 24. The faulty portion of thread may then be cut out. the ends pieced together, and the winding machine restarted. Movement of lever 11 may actuate stop mechanism as well as or instead of the cutting mechanism, or it may actuate signalling, recording or measuring apparatus. Wheels 1 and 6 may be free or driven, and wheel 6 may be replaced by a gravitationally or spring-loaded feeler arm.
