Abstract

779,548. Measuring continuous lengths. LINEN INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 16, 1953 [Nov. 15, 1952], No. 28856/52. Class 42 (2). [Also in Groups IX and XL (b)] In a method of measuring the amount of material delivered from a textile machine a lengthmeasuring device is driven at a speed proportional to the speed of the delivery mechanism of the machine and a detector device is operative to interrupt the drive to the measuring device when the material is not being delivered such that the measuring device indicates the amount of material which has been delivered. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a pneumatic yarn detector head is used which consists of a fine jet of air passing through an orifice 1 in the bottom of a V-shaped guide 2 against which bears a yarn 3. The orifice 1 is connected to a bellows 5 and also through a capillary tube 6 to a supply of compressed air 7. A second identical orifice 8 is connected to a second bellows 10 and also to the supply 7 through a second capillary tube 11. A pre-set counter 22 is operated through wheel 21 and pawl 20 by pulses of compressed air from source 7 controlled by relay 16 operated by a cam 17 driven from the machine. When the yarn is missing or is stationary the pressure in the bellows 5 is substantially equal to that in the bellows 10, the lever 12 is then balanced and the relay 14 is closed thus preventing the operation of the counter 22. When the yarn is being wound its presence, under tension over the orifice 1, causes an increase in pressure in and expansion of the bellows 5 (Fig. 1) which moves the lever 12 to open the relay 14 and thus permit operation of the counter 22. When the counter 22 indicates that the desired length of yarn is on the package being wound a knife edge 24 is closed against the anvil 25 thus cutting or stopping the yarn 3. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 a photo-electric cell 27 is used to detect the presence or absence of the yarn 3. When the yarn is passing an alternating current is produced in the electric circuit due to the variation in the diameter of the yarn. This current keeps the contacts 35, 36 of relay 34 closed thus permitting the counter 40 to be operated through contacts 38 and 39 by the cam 37. When the yarn 3 is missing or stationary there is no signal in the electric circuit, the contacts of relay 34 open and the operation of the counter 40 ceases. An embodiment is also described which deals with a number of yarns. Specification 716,370, [Group IX], is referred to.
