A web 11 coming from a scutcher passes to be wound into a lap 24 on driving rollers about calender rollers 13, 14, 15, 16 and passes 22, 23 the axes of which lie in a plane inclined to the horizontal. The lap roller 21 onto which the web is wound has pressure applied to its ends by a pneumatic piston-cylinder arrangement 25. When a length measuring device initiates doffing rollers 22, 23 are accelerated to break the lap. Subsequently the pressure in arrangement 25 is reversed so that the piston rods rise and levers 31, operated by fixed cams 33, engage the ends of the lap roller 21 and push it forwards onto a tray 34. An empty lap roller 35 resting in front of driving roller 23 is then lifted by levers 36 onto the driving rollers 22, 23. During rotation of levers 36 the hollow interior of the perforated lap roller 35 is connected to the interior of driving roller 23 which in turn is connected by a duct 37 to a source of low pressure; this air flows into the lap roller and the engagement of the web thereon is ensured. After a predetermined time an electrical timing device returns levers 36 to their initial position and cuts off the suction to the lap roller. In an alternative form the suction is applied to the interior of roller 35 directly through a tube connectable thereto and not through the interior of roller 23. The calender roller stack 13, 14, 15, 16 is weighted by a pneumatic arrangement 19, 20. The Web is threaded therethrough by a plate 17 and a nozzle 18 which is operable from the front of the machine by a push button to direct a blast of air and oil mist onto. the web and force it between rollers 14, 15. Plate 17 and nozzle 18 may be replaced by a nozzle directing air between rollers 14 and 15 and' a further nozzle to direct air between roller 15, 16.
